World Peace Day 2024: Peace Corps of Nigeria celebrates universal peace, calls for passage of bill

The Peace Corps of Nigeria on Saturday joins millions around the world to celebrate the universal values of peace, compassion, and unity on the 2024 World Peace Day, saying, it a time to reflect on the significance of this day.

In a statement which was made available to CAPITAL POST on Saturday in Abuja by the Ag. Corps Public Relations Officer (CPRO), ACG Samson Oteh, it reminded the whole world on the treaty regarding the declaration and programme of action on culture of peace which has been celebrated for the past 25 years.

The statement reads in full: “This year marks the 25th anniversary of the United Nations General Assembly’s adoption of the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace. In that declaration, the United Nations’ most inclusive body recognized that peace “not only is the absence of conflict, but also requires a positive, dynamic participatory process where dialogue is encouraged and conflicts are solved in a spirit of mutual understanding and cooperation.”
This year’s theme, “Cultivating a Culture of Peace,” resonates deeply with our organization’s mission to foster a culture of peace and development in Nigeria. Nigeria, a diverse and vibrant country, has seen its fair share of peace-related challenges. From communal conflicts to religious tensions and insurgency, we have experienced the devastating consequences of violence and instability. However, we must acknowledge the collective efforts made by individuals and organizations in fostering peace within our borders.
“The Nigerian Peace Corps itself has played a crucial role in promoting peace and harmony across the nation. Through its various initiatives, the organization has worked closely with communities, implementing grassroots projects, and conducting peace-building workshops to reduce conflict and violence. By focusing on youth development, leadership training, and promoting dialogue, the Nigerian Peace Corps has been instrumental in fostering a culture of peace among our future leaders.
“However, despite our efforts, the absence of a legal framework hinders our full potential. The Nigerian Peace Corps Bill, which is before the National Assembly, remains pending. In order to further strengthen our commitment to peace, we must recognize the need for a legislative framework that supports and empowers organizations like the Nigerian Peace Corps. We urge the Nigerian Senate to prioritize the passage of this bill, which will enable us to operate with greater autonomy, effectiveness, and will pave the way for peace-building initiatives in our beloved nation.
“The Nigerian Peace Corps bill seeks to formalize and provide legal backing for the organization, enabling it to carry out its activities effectively and efficiently. Passage of the bill would grant the Nigerian Peace Corps the authority to train, and deploy peace officers who can work alongside existing security agencies to promote peace and stability in communities across Nigeria. This synergy between these entities can create a more comprehensive and holistic approach towards peace.
“Additionally, the bill would provide a framework for collaborations with international organizations, enabling the Nigerian Peace Corps to tap into global resources and expertise in peace-building. This not only enhances our capabilities in addressing peace issues but also highlights Nigeria’s dedication to the global peace movement.
“As we celebrate World Peace Day, let us remember that in unity lies strength. The passage of the Nigerian Peace Corps bill will serve as a testament to Nigeria’s commitment to peace. It will demonstrate our determination to provide a safer, more prosperous future for all Nigerians, regardless of their ethnic, religious, or social background.
:Therefore, we humbly beseech the Nigerian Senate to prioritize the passage of the Nigerian Peace Corps bill, with hopes of subsequent presidential assent. This timely action will empower the Nigerian Peace Corps toward its noble mission of peace-building and contribute significantly to the overall stability and prosperity of our great nation.
“On this World Peace Day 2024, let us embark on a journey of unity, compassion, and dialogue, with the Nigerian Peace Corps leading the way towards a more peaceful Nigeria. Let us unite in our quest for a harmonious and peaceful society, where every citizen can thrive.”

State of Emergency in Rivers discredit Nigeria’s image — Jonathan

Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan has expressed disappointment over the declaration of State of emergency in Rivers State, saying it discredits Nigeria’s image.

The declaration by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has sent Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara packing for six months, while the elected members of the State House of Assembly have also been suspended.

Jonathan stated this while speaking as the Chairman at the Haske Satumari Foundation Colloquium in Abuja on Saturday.
He said elected officials have been removed from office in a very disappointing manner.
Contrary to Jonathan’s view however, the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, expressed support for Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers.
The party said no responsible government will allow a situation to deteriorate before taking decisive action in the best interest of its citizens.
NNPP National Chairman, Dr. Agbo Major, told newsmen: “President Tinubu is the Chief Security Officer of Nigeria.
“The information available to him as president from intelligence sources may not be in the public purview.
“The government in Rivers was suspended and no one can actually say what would have happened by now, judging from the deepening crisis.
“The crisis was further compounded by some leaders who, instead of offering advice or promoting peace during the turmoil, allowed it to escalate before later stepping in to criticize.”
But for President Jonathan, “These actions by key actors in the executive and legislative arms of government paint the country in a negative light.”
He said it was not the norm for former presidents to comment on issues, so as not to heat up the polity.
However, Jonathan said, his comment became necessary after calls from many Nigerians, urging him to speak on the events in Rivers State.
He added that the image of the country and how much investments a country attracts is dependent on the actions of the executive, legislature and judiciary of that country.
Goodluck Jonathan faulted the situation where an individual can dictate to the judiciary, noting that it makes it difficult for anyone to have faith in the judiciary.
