Mr. Peter Obi

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Mr Peter Obi on Thursday faulted the political leadership, which he said was responsible for the nation’s woes.

Obi believed that the nation found itself in a messy situation because “drivers of the country don’t know where we are going” in leading the country.

Disclosing his mission in 2023 presidential race on the platform of the Labour Party, he vowed to return power to the people, and provide a responsible leadership, if he wins.

Obi, who formerly governed Anambra State spoke at the Labour Party and Coalition for Peter Obi leadership summit in Abuja on Thursday.

Speaking at a well attended event by different Coalition groups, Obi insisted on wrestling power from those who hold it presently and return it back to the people.

Obi said: “Our job is to take power from those who have it and give it back to you. We have a country called Nigeria but we don’t have Nigerians. What we want to do is to create Nigerians.

“The only way to create Nigerians is to make people to have hope in Nigeria and the only way they will have faith in Nigeria is that there is hope in Nigerians.

According to him, that what was lacking in the nation is leadership, stating was not contesting with Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed to sample leadership, but to provide responsible leadership to Nigerians.

He likened the present leadership to a ‘driver that don’t know where he is going’, hence, there was need for removal of the leadership through voting in 2023, so that Nigerians would not be further led astray.

He urged Nigerians to endure, noting that the present leadership has few months to go.

He also pledged to return the country to production.

Obi said: “All we want to do is to move this country from consumption to production.”

The National Chairman of theParty, Julius Abure boasted that the party will win the 2023 presidential election.

Abure, who is a former trade union leader, said the party was on a mission to rescue Nigeria.

He said the country was tilting towards collapse as a result of insecurity and a failing economy.

Director – General of Obi/Datti Campaign Organisation, Dr Doyin Okupe warned that Nigerians would suffer if the country continued on the same path.

He said the party would mobilise to ensure that everyone at the polling stations voted for the Labour Party.

Vice Presidential Candidate of the party, Datti Baba-Ahmed called for calm ahead of the election.

He cautioned election riggers to “sheath their sword” and allow the voice of the people to prevail.

Baba-Ahmed said: “We do not take anything from anybody for campaign. We are not looking for money in government. We are looking for how to manage government money by following a serious leader who knows how to create money.

“I am following a leader who has nothing to achieve again in this life except to see a peaceful and prosperous nation.

“It pains me when a uniform staff of a federal government of Nigeria, in broad daylight will collect money. Each time I see it, my heart breaks. That similar act is a bad a $20 billion scandal and it happens everyday. We are going to end it. We are going to change it.”

BREAKING: Rivers House of Assembly serves Governor Fubara impeachment notice, alleges misconduct

Published

on

After a long legal battle between Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara and 27 State House of Assembly legislators loyal to the former governor, Nyesom Wike which was fought up to the Supreme Court in favour of lawmakers, a notice of impeachment has been served on the Governor on Monday in Portharcourt,

The notice a copy of which was obtained by CAPITAL POST alleged gross misconduct against Governor and his Depuy, Ngozi Odu, thereby escalating fresh crisis in the oil rich city.

The alleged infraction if proved is constitutionally strong to orchestrate impeachment which has been the focus of the lawmakers since they won at the Supreme Court and were back to sitting in the State parliament as all entreaties by the governor was rebuffed by the Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule.

In the heat of post Supreme Court crisis, the political godfather of the 27 lawmakers, Nyesom Wike who is now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, said he will not put a stumbling block to the Assembly members if they chose to do their work.

In the long drawn battle, allies of Nyesom Wike insisted that the governor has 80% gone out of the office, hence, Monday’s letter only goes to show the Assembly’s resolution to remove governor Fubara out of office. This is despite Fubara’s effort to present the 2025 budget of Rivers State to the Assembly after he was put under pressure to do by the lawmakers.

The notice, submitted to the Speaker through the Clerk of the Assembly, cites reckless and unconstitutional expenditure of public funds among other allegations, that will put the governor under tight corner of not being able to defend the allegations.

Reacting, some political figures have called for Fubara’s resignation or impeachment, others, including the Ijaw National Congress, have warned against such actions, citing potential instability in the region.
Meanwhile, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP is suspecting President Bola Tinubu’s support to lawmakers impeaching Fubara, saying, the plot would not be possible without getting green light from the presidency.

The impeachment process involves several legal steps, including the formation of a Committee to investigate the allegations. If found guilty, Fubara and his deputy could face removal from office.

The situation remains volatile, with governance in the state effectively stalled due to the political impasse.
