Senate cautions Nigeria Immigration Service against undermining its powers

The management team of the Nigerian Immigration Service led by Kemi Nanna Nandap has been cautioned against undermining powers of the Senate in performing their statutory duties.

Chairman Senate Committee on Interior Senator Adams Oshiomhole handed down the word of caution during an oversight visit to the Headquarters of Nigeria Immigration Service in Abuja.

According to him, National Assembly as a representative of the people has constitutional right to oversight every agencies of government and hold them accountable.

He noted that the Nigeria Senate while trying to performs its duties has experienced some disappointment from Nigeria Immigration Service except if they have something they are hiding from Nigerians.

He further said, the lawmakers will continue to play its constitutional role in ensuring that agencies of government are accountable to Nigerians, while he directed the Nigeria Immigration Service to provide the nominal roll of Budget performance for the year 2024 when coming for budget defence.

Responding, the Comptroller General, Mrs Kemi Nanna Nandap said, “the Nigeria Immigration Service will continue to collaborate and cooperate with the National Assembly to ensure Nigeria enjoy quality service.

The committee was also received by the Commandant General of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps Dr Ahmed Abubakar Audi at the Command Headquarters in Abuja.

He thanked the Senate Committee of Interior for the visit and assured the National Assembly that the NSCDC will continued to work with the National Assembly.

The Commandant General gave a comprehensive breakdown of NSCDC first and third quarter 2024 capital budget performance in line with new government bottom to top plan.

He said that a total sum of ₦960,283,940 has been released as at October 2024, representing only 9 percent of the ₦10,663,798,695 appropriated for the year.

According to him, low budget allocation to cater for about 50 on going essential capital projects amounting to over ₦16 billion.

He said that delay and inadequate funding was the reason for prolong project completion and pleaded with the National Assembly to assist NSCDC for more budgetary allocation.

According to him, the inadequate funding has also affected the procurement of arms which is a major challenge confronting the agency.

Responding the Chairman of the Committee Senator Adams Oshiomhole
urged the NSCDC to always focus on project that will have direct impact on the agency instead of starting project that have no impact.

The Chairman admonished the NSCDC to always make their recruitment as transparent as possible and to focus on arms procurement.
