Reps Minority caucus mourns late female colleague, Onanuga
The Minority Caucus in the House of Representatives has expressed condolences to the leadership, members of the 10th House, and the entire legislature over the demise of the Deputy Chief Whip, Rt. Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga. She passed away on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, after a brief illness.
This was contained in a statement signed by the Caucus Minority Leader, Rep. Kingsley Chinda; Minority Whip, Rt. Hon. Dr. Ali Isa J.C.; Deputy Minority Leader, Rt. Hon. Aliyu Madaki; and Deputy Minority Whip, Rt. Hon. George Ozodinobi, on Friday in Abuja.
The Caucus described Onanuga as an outstanding lawmaker and resourceful politician whose passion for good governance and interest in the personal development of people were unequivocal.
“No doubt, the House has lost a valuable asset whose unique contributions to debates, assignments, and forthrightness on developmental issues, as well as her unrestrained support for all—regardless of party affinity, ethnicity, and religion—were unparalleled. She was a natural bridge-builder, a resilient politician, and an altruistic personality who consistently demonstrated unusual interest and uncommon support in realizing the 10th House Legislative Agenda and in the personal development of Members,” the statement read.
“Though it is very painful to lose her at a time when her unfeigned interventions for national development and meaningful transformation of Nigeria are most needed, we take solace in the fact that she distinguished herself creditably during her time in the House of Representatives. As the Deputy Chief Whip and Member representing the people of Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency, she performed her duties with grace, selflessness, and excellence. She will be remembered for her candor, boldness, insights, and ingenuity toward national cohesion, as well as her sustained advocacy for the emancipation of women, youths, and ordinary Nigerians.”
The statement further noted: “From our interactions with her as members of the leadership and colleagues in the 10th House of Representatives, she was very dedicated and committed to her responsibilities. Through her legislative position and various intervention initiatives, Rt. Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga positively impacted lives not only in her constituency but across Ogun State, the South West zone, and Nigeria as a whole. It is gratifying that she was a beacon of hope, a source of inspiration, and a shining light to many.”
“Though we are pained by her shocking departure from this earth, as mere mortals, we submit to the will of the Almighty, who gives and takes when He wills. We pray that God will repose her soul and grant her eternal peace. It is also our prayer that our Creator will comfort her immediate and extended family and grant us all the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss, Amen.
“Adieu, our dear friend, colleague, and associate, Rt. Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga”, the statement read.
