PDP crisis: Group demands resignation, sack of Dan Orbih other NWC members

A Pressure Group in the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) under the umbrella of “Coalition for Good Governance” has demanded the immediate sack of the five members of the National Working Committee, NWC of the Party over alleged anti-Party activities

The affected NWC members are Deputy National Chairman (South), Amb.i Taofeek Arapaja, the National Vice Chairman (South South), Chief Dan Orbih, the National Vice Chairman (South West), Olasoji Adagunodo National Vice Chairman (South East) Chief Ali Odefa and the National Woman Leader, Prof. Stella Affah-Attoe respectfully.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Group’s National Coordinator; Mallam Muhammad Suleiman; General Secretary, Owolabi Adebola; and National Publicity Secretary; Ephraim Obinna which was made available to news men in Abuja
The Group while condemning the alleged bribery and inducement of the members of the NWC levelled against the National Chairman of the Party, Senator Iyorchia Ayu demanded for thorough investigation of the affected Party members .
The group accused the officials of working for a desperate selfish interest, to orchestrate damaging narratives aimed at bringing great Party, the PDP to public disrepute and truncate its fortune in the 2023 general election.
The statement read, “In the bid to foist a negative storyline on the Party, these apparently compromised National Officers, yielded to the enemies of the Party by falsely presenting their Housing Allowances, their legitimate entitlement duly approved and paid to national officials and staff of the Party to the public as bribe.
“We have been reliably informed that this is part of the well-funded furtive scheme targeted not at the National Chairman, Sen. Dr. Iyorchia Ayu but to destabilize the PDP, derail its Presidential Campaign and frustrate the deserving victory of our Presidential Candidate, His Excellency Atiku Abubakar in the 2023 general elections.
“We have also received information of how huge sums of money exchanged hands to prosecute to bring the PDP to public opprobrium a day after the inauguration of the Party’s Presidential Campaign Council.
“The action of these National Officers amounts to serious betrayal of trust, gross misconduct, abuse of office and unpardonable anti-Party activity in violation of Section 58 (1) of the Constitution of the PDP, 2017 (as amended).
“This is especially as these National Officers are part of the National Working Committee which approved the funds in line with the already established Terms and Conditions of Service of staff and Principal officers of the Party.
“In this regard, we call for the immediate investigation into the financial activities of these officials following allegations that they were heavily bribed to execute such a despicable scheme against the Party and our Presidential Candidate.
“We call for a scrutiny of their bank records following findings that they received their Housing Allowances since September 14, 2022 and utilized it for the designated purpose. An investigation should ascertain who raise the funds they returned after spending their Housing Allowances.
“This is especially given allegations that these Party officials disclaimed and returned the Housing Allowance after huge sums exceeding the Housing Allowances were reportedly paid into their accounts by agents of a particular state governor to work against the Party.
“Consequently, we call for immediate resignation, suspension and investigation of these National Officers of our Party for anti-party activity and attempt to scuttle our Presidential Campaign.
“Moreover, since his election as Deputy National Chairman (South), Amb. Taofeek Arapaja has taken no steps to unite and stabilize the Party in the South. Rather he allowed disunity to fester in such a manner that threatens the existence of the Party in the region. He is a huge liability to our Party and having been exposed should resign forthwith.
“In the same vein the National Vice Chairman, (South South) Dan Orbih has continued to demonstrate serious disloyalty and lack of capacity for leadership,he has reduced his office to an annex of a particular State Governor. He has not demonstrated desired qualities of a leader and as such should resign.
“Similarly, the National Woman Leader, Prof. Affah-Attoe has not demonstrated the desired capacity to mobilize our women for the 2023 general elections. She lacks vision and cannot command the support and loyalty of the women. She should therefore resign and allow a more vibrant person to provide leadership for our women.
“Finally, we call on all members and teeming supporters of our Party to remain focused and not allow our Party to be distracted by sponsored antics by such unpatriotic individuals.”

South East: Ebonyi Governor orders arrest of 6 Commissioners, LG Chairman over conract breach

Six Commissioners and a Local Government Council Chairman have been arrested on the order of the Governor of Ebonyi State, Mr Francis Nwifuru over alleged breach of contracts.

The Chairman Afikpo Local Government Area, Mr. Timothy Nwachi, was suspended from office with immediate effect.

Reports said, the Commissioners were accused of contractual breach in the ongoing construction of 140 housing units for the Izzo and Amaze communities, which were displaced by the Ezilo/Ezza Ezilo communal crisis in Ishielu Local Government Area.
The names of embattled Commissioners are: Professor Omari Omaka (Tertiary Education), Victor Chukwu (Environment), Ifeanyi Ogbuewu (Culture and Tourism), Uchenna Igwe (Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters), Moses Ekuma (Health), and Felix Igboke (Project Monitoring).
They were first declared wanted following their disappearance from the State Executive Committee meeting when the matter became known in the media, and the Ebonyi State immediately launched manhunt before they were eventually arrested.
Commenting on the development, Ilang Donatus, Chairman of the State Executive Council Committee on the Izzo and Amaze Housing Project, stated that the action was taken due to the officials’ and contractors’ failure to adhere to contract terms.
Donatus noted that the officials are delaying the housing project, which Governor Nwifuru had planned to commission in celebration of his second anniversary in office.
Donatus emphasised the governor’s frustration over the slow pace of construction, noting that the housing initiative was designed to provide relief to victims of communal crises.
He was quoted as saying, “The governor is not happy over the pace of the work, which ought to have been completed. The government has decided to clamp down on the contractors and commissioners who were mandated to supervise those projects.
“As you can see, our governor is a man with a passionate heart, he likes giving succour, hence the building of those houses for the victims of the communal crisis. He is not happy that the project is delayed and has ordered to arrest of all the commissioners who are supposed to ensure the speedy completion of the housing units.
Adding to the concerns, Mrs. Maria Okohu, Special Assistant to the Governor on Women Mobilization (Ebonyi Central) and a member of the Executive Council Committee, described the situation as an act of sabotage.
She stressed that failure to complete the housing project on schedule undermines the governor’s development agenda for the state.
In response, the state government has vowed to continue its crackdown, warning that further arrests will be made until all implicated commissioners and contractors are held accountable.
Reports also suggest that the Nigerian police have issued invitations to several officials who were not present during the committee’s enforcement visits.
Upon inquiry, Ebonyi State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Joshua Ukandu, stated that he had no knowledge of the arrest or detention of the accused commissioners and the suspended council chairman.
When questioned about whether the Command had invited the officials following the governor’s directive, the police spokesperson responded, “We don’t have any commissioner in our custody. I’m not aware of any invitation and I have asked and I was told we don’t have any commissioner in custody. I will still ask about the invitation but for now, I don’t know anything of such.”
