NAWOJ advocates economic empowerment among women
The National President of the Nigerian Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Aisha Ibrahim Kwaya-Bura has stressed the need for the economic empowerment of the female gender in the country.
Kwaya-Bura stated this at a one-day training organised for female journalists by the National Secretariat of NAWOJ, in commemoration of the 2024 International Women’s Day on Tuesday in Abuja.
The theme of the programme is: “Bridging the gap of gender based reporting”.
According to the National President, statistics revealed a far higher poverty rate is recorded among women compared to their male counterparts.
Represented by the Vice President Zone D, Chizoba Ogbeche, the NAWOJ boss noted that lack of women’s empowerment is contributing to gender disparity in the country.
“Even the women in the news being Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of banks, does not in 2024 translate to the empowerment of women. Statistics have it that there are more poor women than men. In employment, a CEO who is a woman, earns less than a CEO who is a man. Women should be economically independent”, she stressed.
On her part, the programme head of Independent Television (ITV), Fransisca Ogar challenged journalists to always amplify women’s voices in their reportage.
