Lionel Messi wins trademark rights case in EU court

Argentina Captain, Lionel Messi won his trade mark rights legal battle over his personal logo.
The Barcelona FC football idol won the case
after the European Union’s top court on Thursday dismissed an appeal against the player from a Spanish cycling clothing brand.

The EU court while dismissing the case in favour of Lionel Messi explained in a statement that it authorised the footballer to register the trade mark Messi.

The intellectual property suit appeal from the EU’s intellectual property office EUIPO and the Spanish company Massi was dismissed, thereby exonerated Lionel Messi of wrongdoing.
In 2011, Lionel Messi approached the Intellectual property office for a trade of his surname as a sportswear, footwear and equipment brand.
The trade mark was met with stiff opposition from the proprietors of Massi, who contended that the player’s brand would cause confusion to customers.
Though EU property office upheld their complaint in 2013, Messi’s appeal in 2018 was dismissed.
The statement added that the Court of Justice had dismissed an appeal by the clothing brand and EUIPO against the annulment.
It said the General Court was correct to say Messi’s reputation was a relevant factor in establishing a difference between the player’s brand and the cycling company.
The 33-year-old Messi has been named the world footballer of the year a record six times and is the all-time top scorer for FC Barcelona, Argentina and in Spanish football.
He was named the world’s wealthiest football player by Forbes earlier this month, pocketing an estimated 92 million dollars from his salary from Barca plus 34 million dollars in endorsements.
The Argentinian made global headlines last month for declaring his intention to leave FC Barcelona, where he has spent his entire career.

Barcelona Defender Andreas Christensen out for 3-4 weeks

Just a few days after receiving the medical green light, FC Barcelona defender Andreas Christensen has suffered an injury relapse, ruling him out of action for three to four weeks, reports Javi Miguel.

Christensen had been out since late January due to a right soleus muscle injury but resumed training last week and was given a discharge by the medical staff this past Wednesday.

As such it was expected that the Danish international would be back in the matchday squad for tomorrow’s game against Real Sociedad.
But during his press conference, manager Hansi Flick dropped a bombshell, revealing that Christensen had once again been injured and had to leave the training session early.
Now, Javi Miguel confirms that the former Chelsea defender has suffered a relapse of his previous injury – the right soleus muscle problems – and will now be out for another three to four weeks.
This comes as a major setback for Christensen, who has played just one game so far this season – which came on the opening day against Valencia.
The Dane missed the entire first half of the season after that due to the Achilles tendon problem which needed him to undergo surgery.
Having returned to training in January, he suffered the soleus muscle injury and has now had a relapse of the same in today’s session.
With his contract expiring next year and considering his fitness problems, it will not come as a surprise if Barcelona opt to sell Christensen in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Osimhen shines, net brace in Galatasaray, Kasimpasa 3-3 draw

Galatasaray and Kasımpaşa played out a 3-3 draw on Sunday at the Recep Tayyip Erdoğan Stadium.
Nigerian striker, Victor Osimhen netted two goals, bringing his season tally to 14.

Despite Osimhen’s brace, Kasımpaşa’s resilience ensured a share of the spoils in this six-goal spectacle, in a thrilling Turkish Süper Lig clash.

This result maintains Galatasaray’s position at the top of the league, though their lead has been slightly reduced.
Kasımpaşa, currently mid-table, will take confidence from holding the league leaders to a draw.
Osimhen opened the scoring in the 12th minute with a penalty, giving the away team a first-half lead.
Seven minutes into the second half, M.B Ouanes equalized for the home side, and nine minutes later, J. Brekalo scored to put them ahead in the 61st minute.
Mario Lemina brought the visitors back on level terms in the 69th minute before Osimhen converted another penalty just two minutes later.
However, five minutes into stoppage time, Hajradinovic found the net to secure a draw for the home team.
The Nigerian forward netted his first brace for Galatasaray in a dramatic 3-3 draw at the same club at RAMS Park, Istanbul, in September 2024.
