Late Tordue Salem: Group threatens to occupy Force headquarters if killers are not fished out in 3 days

As reactions continue to trail the murder of Mr Tordue Salem, a journalist covering the lower Chamber of the National Assembly, the Coalition of South East Youth Leaders, COSEYL, an umbrella body of all the youth groups in the South East geopolitical zone on Friday said it received with rude shock the unsavoury news of the death of Tordue Salem who’s remains were recovered in Abuja.

The group described the assassination of Salem as wickedness of the highest order and condemn it in strongest terms.

They demanded that the perpetrators no matter how highly placed be fished out in three days to be brought to justice, or face lawful protest that will occupy Force headquarters.
In a statement by the group’s President General, Hon. Goodluck Ibem which was made available to CAPITAL POST in Abuja on Friday, stated that
the gruesome assassination of Salem contravenes the commitment undertaken in Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights to protect everyone’s freedom of opinion and expression and to create the conditions for its effective exercise.
The group asserted that this right is an essential prerequisite for the progress and development of a democratic society, governed by the rule of law and respect for human rights.
“From all indications, the gruesome assassination of Salem is a calculated attempt by some power brokers to intimidate the men of the fourth estate of the realm from performing their civil duties and responsibilities.
“The entire process sounds like tales by moon light. For the police to find the corpse of Salem means that some suspects involved in the murder of Salem took them to the place where the kept his corpse. We want the police to tell us who the suspects are . Who hired them to kill Salem and the reason why he was murdered.
“There is no Killing without a motive. Salem is a professional journalist and not a common criminal that will be assassinated over sweets or biscuits. We demand that the police must expose and bring to Justice all the actors involved in the murder of Salem Torlue.
“We want to let the Federal government, state governments and all state actors to know that we will not entertain any form of impunity against journalists.
“The tales by moon light story on Salem is totally unacceptable to us. The killers of Salem must be found and prosecuted openly by relevant authorities. No form of secrecy will be entertained in this trial.
“We call on the Inspector General of Police IGP Usman Alkali Baba to within 3 working days make public the names of those involved in the gruesome killing of Salem or we will lawfully occupy the Nigerian Police Force Headquarters Abuja until the needful is done.
“The entire scenario surrounding the sudden disappearance and death of Salem Torlue shows that there is a high powered conspiracy and the conspirators and perpetrators must be brought to Justice.
“We call on the Nigerian Guild of Editors, NGE, the Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ, Scholarships, and all Nigerians to rise up in defence of our democracy.
“Injustice against one is injustice against all. The gruesome murder of Tordue Salem by enemies of our democracy is totally unacceptable. The apple of our democracy’s eye have been touched by enemies of our Society and we will not take It lying down.
“Attack against the press is an attack on the foundation of our democracy. It is an open truth that Salem Torlue was gruesomely murdered in order to intimidate, harass and gag the press. Indeed our democracy have been threatened.
“We call on the International community and the United Nations to come to the aid of Nigerians before our journalists and media practitioners are wiped out by some anti-democratic forces who are hell-bent on truncating our democracy for their selfish and pecuniary gains”, the statement concluded.

Sexual harassment allegation sad, Akpabio, Natasha should submit to investigation – Saraki

Former President of the 8th Senate, Dr Olubukola Saraki has expressed sadness over the ongoing controversy bordering on sexual harassment as claimed by Senator representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

Saraki said the allegation was an ill-wind that will not blow anybody any good, insisting that the institution of the National Assembly must be protected at all costs.

The former Governor of Kwara State expressed that he was personally sad watching the controversy from afar, noting if steps were not taken swiftly, the controversy could have negative effect on the institution.
In a statement he personally signed and made available to journalists on Saturday, Saraki urged Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio and Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to submit themselves to investigation to save the integrity of the National Assembly.
He said: “I have watched from afar the recent development in the Senate between the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and the Senator from Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
“It is a development that has made me sad because of its overall negative effect on the integrity, sanctity, image, and public perception of the institution.
“I believe that every person who has had anything to do with the National Assembly, particularly as a leader, member, and worker should always jealously protect these values which make the institution, the numero uno, among the three arms of government.
“It is for these reasons that I believe that the two parties in this dispute and their supporters in and out of the chamber should be mindful of the impact of their actions, inactions, reactions, claims, and counter-claims to be sure that nothing is done to rubbish the institution.
“The constitution, laws of the country, rules of the Senate as well as parliamentary conventions and practices should be adhered to in resolving the issue. And the resolution should be done transparently without being seen to be protective of any of the parties. Rather, the objectives should be to unfold the truth and to protect the law-making institution against a wrong perception of involvement in or tolerance of lawbreaking.
“At this point, with the public claims made by the Senator, the right measure to take is to institute an open, transparent, and honest investigation by the Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions.
“Both parties must submit to the investigation, fully cooperate with the committee, and stake their claims before it. This is not the first time a Senate President would appear before the Committee to aid it in the conduct of a transparent and open investigation.”
He recalled that submitting himself for investigation during his time when a Senator alleged that he imported without Customs clearance, adding that it should be a precedent to the President of the 10th Senate.
“I remember during the 8th Senate when a Senator claimed that I imported an official car for my use as Senate President and that customs duty was not paid on the vehicle.
“Since I knew the claim was false, the matter was referred to the Ethics Committee and I appeared before the committee to testify, in the full glare of the media. From my testimony, it was clear the Senator who made the allegation got his facts wrong and was only being mischievous.
“Also, on the day the committee submitted its report for debate on the floor, I stepped down and allowed my deputy to preside. The transparent manner in which the investigation and the debate on the report were handled assured everybody that there was no case.
“This is a precedent that the leadership of the 10th Senate should follow.
“In my case, the decision to allow an open investigation and subjecting myself to it was not an easy one. It was humbling but I realized that was the best decision and in the end I am happy I travelled that route.
“We should not allow the Senate to be cast in the shroud of an institution encouraging sexual harassment, gender bias, abuse of office, flagrant disregard for standing orders and rules, and lack of orderliness.
“This is what a transparent, open, and unbiased investigation should achieve. The due process should be followed in this case such that where anybody is found to have committed any wrong, the wrong should be pointed out and corrected. Also, the right remedy should be made.
Saraki averred that he was not indicting or exonerating anyone, but wanted to relay his experience and assert that investigation would put paid to the controversy once and for all.
“Let me make it clear without any ambiguity that I am neither stating that Akpabio is guilty of anything nor am I expressing the opinion that Senator Akpoti Uduaghan is right in her actions and claims.
“My position is that an investigation is needed to find out the truth and protect the integrity of the Senate.
“For me, the institution of the Senate is so important, sacred, and pre-eminent. All lovers of democracy should always work to strengthen it. No leader or member should be allowed to openly or surreptitiously work to subvert its sanctity.”

Leaked Memo: Obaseki’s loyalists are spies, redeploy them out of Government House – APC urges Okpebholo

In the aftermath of leaked official memo recently in the Edo State Government House, the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC in the State has advised Governor Monday Okpebholo to redeploy suspected loyalists of the immediate past administration of Godwin Obaseki out of Government House.

Leaders of APC speaking through the Spokesman for the Edo APC Momodu Adams, said in the aftermath of the leakage of official sensitive documents and information in the care of some staff, the governor should no longer afford to work with certain persons.

Momodu Adams in a statement made available to journalists warned Governor Okpebholo of dangers of working close with those workers who prove injurious to his administration.
He argued that the majority of the civil servants in the current administration, particularly those in Government House are still tied to Obaseki’s apron.
He said, “APC leaders are worried about the development because some persons are leaking official documents in their possession to PDP leaders, especially Ogie and Asue Ighodalo, who are trying to upturn the victory of Governor Okpebholo at the Tribunal.
“If something urgent is not done, who knows what will happen next?
“About 98 per cent of the staff who worked in Government House during Obaseki’s administration, including the protocol officers and those who serve tea, are still in Okpebholo’s administration. We are worried. People hide or sit on files meant for the Governor.
“We understand that media houses and journalists in Edo State are losing patience with Governor Okpebholo’s administration. When the media starts its war with the new administration, it will mess up everything.”

Sexual Harassment: Let Akpabio defend himself – Natasha to Senate President’s wife

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan representing Kogi Central Senatorial District in the 10th National Assembly has advised the wife of the Senate President, Mrs Unoma Ekaette Akpabio to allow the Senate President defend himself in the allegation of sexual harassment levelled against him.

Natasha on Friday revealed on Arise Television how Akpabio had on 8th November, 2023 made sexual advancement at her when she travelled to Akwa Ibom with her husband to celebrate the Senate President’s birthday.

The revelation has been drawing reactions with the Senate President’s wife instituting a lawsuit against the Kogi female lawmaker, claiming the sum of N250 billion in damages to her husband.
Mrs Akpabio speaking at a press conference in Abuja dismissed the allegations against her husband and asserted that both families have shared cordial relationship for years before Natasha got married to Uduaghan, a businessman.
Natasha in a letter through her lawyer, Victor Giwa on Saturday 1st March, 2025, advised Mrs Unoma Akpabio to stay away from the matter to allow the Senate President to defend himself of sexual advancement against her.
The letter, titled “Stay Away from Sen. Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Sexual Harassment and Intimidation Allegation Against Sen. President Godswill Akpabio; To Safeguard Your Sanity and That of Your Family,” stressed that the accusations were personal to the Senate President and that he should be left to defend himself.
Natasha insisted that she endured harassment from Godswill Akpabio, but decided to speak out, saying that she was not interested in calling out Mrs Akpabio in the unfortunate saga, but she should restrain herself from dabbling into the matter henceforth.
The letter partly read: “Consequently, we would like to state that the allegations of our client are personal to the Senate President, and our client believes the Senate President has the capacity to defend himself and refute any of these allegations against him.”
She said she has enough evidence to back up her claims, urging the wife to allow her husband to defend himself for the sake of her sanity and family.
“Our client has concrete evidence to substantiate her allegations. We will suggest that you leave the defense of the allegations for the Senate President to maintain your sanity and that of your family.
“Our client remains resolute in the defense of Nigerian women and as a family woman, she will continue to maintain our common heritage and family values.
The dispute between Akpoti-Uduaghan and Akpabio began after she refused to sit in a designated seat during a Senate session, citing Order 10 of the Senate Standing Rules.
