INEC plans improved elections – Yakubu

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has assured Nigerians that the Commission is implementing reforms to improve elections following the lessons learned from the 2023 general elections.

Change of Name

Prof. Yakubu made this known during a meeting with the new European Union, EU, Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, His Excellency Gautier Mignot, who visited INEC’s headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, January 28, 2025.

“Since the 2023 elections, we have reviewed our performance and received feedback from over 200 observer groups, including the EU Election Observation Mission (EU-EOM). Based on their recommendations, we have made improvements in voter accreditation, logistics, and result management,” Yakubu said.

The INEC Chairman explained that the Commission has adopted measures such as better training for election officials, deploying more Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) devices, and faster uploading of results to the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV). “The functionality of BVAS for fingerprint and facial authentication has greatly improved,” he added.

Yakubu cited the Ondo State Governorship election as an example of progress, noting that 80% of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) were collected by eligible voters and logistical challenges were addressed.

The EU Ambassador praised Nigeria’s efforts to strengthen its democracy through technology. “Democracy thrives on shared experiences. The EU will continue to support Nigeria’s democratic journey without imposing ideas,” Mignot said.

Prof. Yakubu also clarified misconceptions about donor funding, stating, “INEC does not receive direct funding from the EU or other partners. Support comes through technical assistance, consultancy, and capacity building by implementing partners selected by the donors.”

He emphasized the importance of collaboration with political parties, civil society groups, the media, and security agencies, describing elections as a “multi-stakeholder responsibility.”

The visit marked the EU Ambassador’s first official engagement in Nigeria since assuming office. Yakubu thanked him for prioritizing INEC, reaffirming the Commission’s commitment to credible elections.
