Grammys 2021: Burna Boy, Wizkid win at music awards
Nigeria Afrobeats stars Burna Boy and Wizkid have both won awards at the 2021 Grammys.
Burna Boy won the Best Global Music Album category while Wizkid won the Best Music Video for his song with Beyoncé; Brown Skin Girl, from Lion King: The Gift album.
Beyoncé’s daughter Blue Ivy was also a winner on the song.
The Best Music Video award is given to the artist, video director and video producer.
Burna Boy, real name Damini Ogulu, a nominee for a second consecutive year, won with his Twice As Tall album.
The 63rd Grammy Awards is being held in Los Angeles. Traditionally billed as “music’s biggest night”, this year’s ceremony is different because of the coronavirus pandemic.
There is no audience, and performers have been separated onto five stages, arranged in a circle inside the Los Angeles Convention Center to maintain social distancing.
Burna Boy, 29, beat four others including the Malian band, Tinariwen.
The Grammys nomination described Twice As Tall as “a masterclass in the vibe and hustle that have made Burna Boy an international musical force”.
“[He] continues to torch limitations, seamlessly blending styles and genres and fearlessly fuelling the fire heating the melting pot of pop, Afrobeat, dancehall, reggae and more,” it said.
The album features a wide range of international artists such as Stormzy, Youssou Ndour, Naughty By Nature, and Chris Martin of Coldplay, and had Sean Combs as executive producer.
The video which saw Wizkid win was described as “a feast for the fashion-forward and a celebration of Black and brown female beauty everywhere”.

Burna Boy was nominated in the same category in 2019 – then known as Best World Music Album – but lost out to Angelique Kidjo at the awards ceremony in 2020.
However, Kidjo dedicated her win to him, saying: “Burna Boy is among those young artists that come from Africa that is changing the way our continent is perceived and the way that African music is the bedrock of all music.”
Born in Nigeria’s Port Harcourt, Burna Boy released his first album, LIFE, an acronym for Leaving an Impact For Eternity, in 2013.
That album was followed by the release of Redemption in 2015 and Outside in 2018 that included the international hit track, Ye.
But it was with his 2019 African Giant album that Burna Boy really hit the international scene and earned his first Grammys nomination.
Often compared to Nigerian superstar Fela Ransome-Kuti, whose songs Burna has sampled generously, he has become increasingly vocal about social causes in Africa.
At the height of the xenophobic attacks in South Africa in 2019, he threatened to never set foot in the country again unless the government took action, although he has since performed in the country.
He was also closely involved in the #EndSARS anti-police brutality protests in Nigeria last year, setting up a fund for victims and releasing a song in memory of those killed on 20 October 2020 at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos.
He also recently tweeted his support for protesters in Senegal who took to the streets after the arrest of opposition leader Ousmane Sonko.

Nigerian-American Afrobeats artist Ewol Samo has announced plans to commemorate his birthday on April 8th by visiting orphanages and elderly care homes, where he will donate essential supplies and spend time with residents. This initiative is spearheaded through his newly launched nonprofit, The Oladayo Shola Apata Foundation (The OSA Foundation), named in honor of his late elder brother, who passed away from bladder cancer two years ago.
According to Ewol Samo, the foundation serves as a special-purpose vehicle for his philanthropic endeavors, focusing on supporting orphans, the elderly, homeless children, and underprivileged individuals. To fund this outreach, he is supplementing his personal donations with contributions from friends and business associates.
“I love giving, and my mantra has always been that sharing is caring. This foundation not only honors my late brother’s memory but also helps me fulfill my lifelong ambition of providing support to those in need,” Ewol Samo shared.
Reflecting on his journey, the artist recalled a moment when a heated altercation with a local Chicago artist led to an interview where his statement—“I was the wrong guy to mess with”—went viral. That experience, he says, taught him the power of words and actions.
“I’ve learned that reacting in anger can have far-reaching consequences, so I’ve been working on channeling all my energy into positivity. This foundation is my way of giving back and setting an example for the younger generation,” he said.
Beyond his philanthropic work, Ewol Samo recently launched ‘The Wrong Guy Podcast,’ a platform for unfiltered conversations about music, culture, and life. He is also in the studio working on an upcoming, yet-to-be-titled project.

The estranged wife of skit maker Ganiyu Kehinde popularly known as Ijoba Lande, has apologised for having sex with Baba Tee,saying she wasn’t like this.
Darasimi was accused of infidelity by her former husband Ijoba Lande who said, he could count up 21 persons including actor Baba Tee sleeping with his wife, fearing that “if he reveals their names, he may not make it home,”.
Despite initially denying it, Baba Tee admitted having a “short” sexual encounter with Darasimi while playing truth or dare game. He claimed he did not know she was Ijoba Lande’s wife.
In an interview with actress Biola Adebayo on the Talk to B podcast published on Saturday, Darasimi pleaded for forgiveness, saying she would not make such a “mistake” again.
“Ijoba Lande, don’t be upset with me. I’m also begging everyone I have disappointed, including Nigerians worldwide. This is not who I am and I pray never to make such a mistake again,” she said.
Darasimi also claimed Ijoba Lande struggled with gambling which pushed the family into financial difficulties.
“I am always surprised when people say I spent Lande’s money and dumped him. Which money did Lande have? He has never been a wealthy guy; he is an addicted gambler who spends all the money he sees on gambling,” said Darasimi.
“His love for gambling is so much such that he gambled with N2 million in a day. Aviator virtual gambling is his favourite. His gambling habit led to him selling his car to fund his gambling lifestyle. This is the reason why he is broke and depressed today. I suffered a lot by borrowing money and food from neighbours.
“He is also very hot-tempered; he hits me whenever he is angry. The major reason why I left him was when he hit me because of the ‘ajo’ money that Marygold was owing. He didn’t want me to pester her for the money. Ijoba Lande was broke when I met him but because of the love I had for him, I still went ahead to marry him. I sponsored most of the things needed during our wedding introduction.”
Popular Nollywood actress Queeneth Hilbert has dragged Actress Destiny Etiko and the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun to Court for plotting to arrest her over an allegation.
CAPITAL POST on Monday reported that Hilbert accused Destiny Etiko of snatching her wealthy boyfriend and threatened to beat her up if she is seen in Asaba, capital of Delta State.
Hilbert said she has hints of arrest and detention on the order of Destiny Etiko.
The boyfriend snatching allegation has resulted to heated debate on social media with fans of both actresses tackling each other.
Following these allegations, Etiko, through her lawyers, demanded a public retraction and filed a ₦100 million defamation suit against Hilbert.
In response, Hilbert approached the Federal High Court in Lagos, claiming the police, at Etiko’s instigation, attempted an unlawful arrest, violating her fundamental rights.
She is seeking legal protection against detention and ₦100 million in damages for the alleged invasion of her privacy
