Ex-FCT Minister, Lt-Gen Useni is dead

He died as a result of protracted illness on Thursday, according to family sources.

His death was immediately confirmed in a statement issued by the Director of Press and Public Affairs to Plateau State Governor, Gyang Bere.

Change of Name

Governor Caleb Mutfwang described the demise of Lt-Gent Jerry Useni, rtd as a tremendous loss to Plateau State, his family and the entire Nigerian Army.

His exemplary life, commitment to service of the nation and the entire security of the country would be an indelible mark, the nation will forever miss.

He noted that General Useni’s tireless efforts to promote peace and security, especially in Northern Nigeria and Plateau State, will forever be remembered.

According to Mutfwang, late Useni had a robust military career even as he served with distinction in various capacities, including as Minister of Transport, Quarter-Master General of the Nigerian Army, and Minister of the FCT after which he joined politics and became Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“After retiring from the military, General Useni transitioned into politics, where he continued his service to the nation.

“He served as Deputy Chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and was elected Senator representing Plateau South Senatorial District in 2015 under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP),” the statement said.

The Governor hailed Gen. Useni, emphasising that his legacy of compassion, kindness, generosity, and dedication to the well-being of others will endure in the lives of those he impacted.

“On behalf of my family, the government, and the peace-loving people of Plateau State, I extend my deepest sympathies to the President, the Nigerian Armed Forces, the immediate family, and all those mourning the loss of this distinguished elder statesman.”
