Crackdown on critics of President Tinubu condemnable – Reps Minority Caucus
…demands immediate release of detained persons
The House of Representatives Minority Caucus has criticized the Federal Government over its crackdown on citizens accused of criticizing the President Bola Tinubu-led government on various platforms.
The caucus also called for the immediate release of individuals detained under these allegations.
This was stated in a press release dated December 22, 2024, and signed by the Minority Caucus Leader, Rep. Kingsley Chinda.
According to the statement, “The Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives is deeply concerned about the growing trend of clamping down on citizens who express dissent against the government.
“It is particularly alarming that agents of the state are reportedly involved in the brazen, callous, and heavy-handed harassment and intimidation of citizens who, through various media, voice their disagreements and apprehensions about government policies they believe could worsen the already dire situation in the country.
“As a responsive and responsible group, we strongly condemn any and all actions by the government—carried out through security and law enforcement agencies—that aim to instill fear, panic, and submission among the people.”
The caucus further stated, “We wish to emphasize that democracy thrives only in an environment where there is a vibrant opposition, dissenting voices, and opportunities for alternative opinions to be expressed without fear or reprisal.
“The Caucus recalls that before 2015, when the All Progressives Congress (APC) came to power, the party frequently engaged in outspoken and, at times, uncivil criticism of the government in power. It is ironic that a party which once freely criticized and castigated its predecessor now rejects and vilifies dissent with such hostility.
“As a Caucus, while we advocate for civil and regulated criticism, we urge the government to refrain from acts of intimidation, coercion, and prosecution of citizens for expressing their opinions. Such actions only serve to undermine democracy.
“We encourage the government to implement impactful, results-oriented policies and initiatives that will improve the lives of Nigerians—an approach that will naturally reduce public criticism.”
The Caucus however called for the immediate release of any citizens detained for criticizing government policies or under any other pretext. They also vowed to pursue legislative measures to address ongoing abuses.
