Controversial Tax Reforms: Tinubu insists, says he wouldn’t mind cutting edges
As Tax Reforms controversy intensify, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has insisted the proposed reform will continue and will be completed.
He said, the proposed reform has come to stay irrespective of any one’s opinion, saying he will mind even the counter opinion.
He stated this on Monday during the presidential media chat.
CAPITAL POST reported that President Tinubu forwarded the proposed Tax Reforms Bills to the two Chambers of the National Assembly since October with deafening voices of opposition particularly in the Northern part of the country.
Reacting to the strong opposition, said the tax reform might not be embraced by everybody, but it was here to stay.
The president maintained that he is open to negotiations on the issue given the mounting opposition to the bills by some governors and senators.
He said, “The tax reform is here to stay. The reform is pro-poor and it is to widen the tax net, so we can have more people paying.
“The hallmark of a good leader is the ability to do what you have to do at the time it ought to be done.
“Tax matters are subjects of debates and negotiations. I don’t mind cutting edges. I will.”
It was recalled that Nigeria’s Senate President, Godswill Obot Akpabio has assured the passage of the bills in his speech during the presentation of the N49.7 trillion 2025 budget presentation to the National Assembly by President Bola Tinubu.
