Controversial infectious bill passes first reading in Senate

The controversial Infectious Bill in the House of Representatives may have found its way into the Senate; with a completely different title as the Senate on Tuesday considered and passed for first reading the National Health Emergency bill.

The Emergency Health Bill is sponsored by Senator Chukwuka Utazi representing Enugu North.

The National Health Emergency Bill comes barely a week after the highly controversial “Control of Infectious Diseases Bill 2020”, rapidly scaled first and second reading in the HRs, fuelling suspicion in some quarters.

Speaking on the proposed law, Senator Ike Ekweremadu representing Enugu West called for details of the new bill to enable his prepare his argument for or against it and to avoid the controversy that has greeted the “Infectious Bill” in the House of Representatives.

To allay all suspicion, the President of the Senate Ahmad Lawan assured that the bill will not be taken for second reading until next week Tuesday to enable lawmakers study the details.
