He stated this on Monday during his familiarisation visit to Hisbah headquarters Office in Kano.

The ex-Senator who represented Kaduna Central Senatorial District said he was happy to hear that Hisbah has not prohibited those who decide to keep afro hair style like him, noting that the issue has been settled, otherwise he was in Kano to defend the right of people to keep their hair.

Sani said the operatives in Kano and other northern states, should rise against insecurity by ideologically confronting kidnappers, bandits and terrorists in the region who are abusing the image of Islam and Muslims by their acts.

He argued that it is the duty of Hisbah to protect the image of Islam and Muslims in the region being abused by the bandits and terrorists who are killing innocent people in the name religion.

“The message I have given them is that the most important and sensitive issue today as a country is the problem of banditry and terrorism and as a religious police, they have a duty to unite and see how they can combat banditry and terrorism in Nigeria.

“Terrorists have been destroying the image of Islam and using the name of Islam to destroy the image of Muslims. There is need for Hisbah to organize themselves and ideologically confront terrorists and bandits, this is very important.

“The need for them to be mobilizing people to rise against banditry and terrorism in northern part of Nigeria is also very important.

“The need for them to reach out to rural communities and educate our citizens on the need for them not to join bandits and terrorists is also very important. So apart for them to be enforcing religious laws, there is need for them at this hour to be very more present, active and agile in finding a lasting solution to the problem of bandits and terrorists that have been kidnapping and killing our people” Shehu Sani said.

On what the Hisbah told him during the visit, he explained that he was there for the visit to clarify the complaints he received about the activities of Hisbah.

“First of all many things have been said about Hisbah, so I said as a former Senator and as a Human rights activist I should visit their office to hear from them, what are their duties and responsibilities and LSO issues that have been attributes to them.

“Secondly they have told me in practical terms that they are against the manufacture, consumption and distribution of alcohol in this state as well as drug abuse. Thirdly they told me that they have a dress code which ifbyou violate you have violated the law of Hisbah. They told me about manqué that if you can remove the head of it, you can put it in your store to display your product.

“Lastly they told me about the types of movies which they allow or disallow as a way of preserving public morality. At least these are some of the things they talked to me about” he stated.

In a unanimous judgment, the five member panel averred that the matters bordering on the leadership or membership of a political party is its internal affair and should not be the business of a Court, hence, the Court has washed off its hands in PDP affairs.

‎The court proceeded to set aside the decision of Appeal Court, Enugu Division which on 20 December 2024 affirmed the removal of Anyanwu by a Federal High Court in Enugu.

The Apex Court held the Federal High Court lacked jurisdiction to have heard the matter instituted by Aniagwu Emmanuel.

Anyanwu contested for Imo State Governorship on the platform of PDP in 2023, but failed to secure victory.

Senators Seriake Dickson and Aminu Tambuwal who was also a former Speaker of the House of Representatives are lawyers and said, the declaration was unconstitutional and would not have their support.

Notwithstanding, their objections, the Senate presided by the Senate President, Godswill Obot Akpabio through a voice vote overwhelmingly supported the president’s move, shutting down an open debate on the matter.

Senator Dickson expressed his gratitude to colleagues who supported his stance and acknowledged the presidency’s modifications to the original declaration. However, he emphasized that the introduced oversight mechanisms did not address the core constitutional concerns.

Dickson also criticized Senate President Godswill Akpabio, accusing him of attempting to silence opposition. “The Senate is a meeting of equals, and no lawmaker should be censored for speaking on national issues,” he stated.

The walkout by the three senators highlights the deepening divisions within the Nigerian Senate and raises concerns about the implications of the state of emergency on the country’s democratic institutions.
