The former Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja between 2004 and 2009, Prof. Nuhu Yaqub is dead.

He died at the age of 73 on Saturday in Abuja after a brief illness.

Change of Name

Professor Yaqub’s tenure was marked by significant advancements in academic programs, infrastructural development, and the promotion of a culture of excellence in the University of Abuja.

The university, in a heartfelt statement, described his passing as an irreplaceable loss, not only to the institution but to the broader academic community. “Professor Yaqub’s leadership, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to education left an indelible mark on the University of Abuja,” the statement read.

Throughout his career, Professor Yaqub was known for his dedication to fostering academic growth and nurturing the talents of students and faculty alike. Many who worked with him remember him as a visionary leader whose passion for education inspired those around him.

As news of his passing spreads, members of the university community, including former students, colleagues, and staff, have taken to social media to share their condolences and fond memories of his impactful leadership.

One alumnus described him as “a father figure and a beacon of knowledge whose contributions will never be forgotten.”

Beyond his tenure at the University of Abuja, Professor Yaqub made notable contributions to the Nigerian education system and held several prestigious positions throughout his career. His efforts earned him national recognition, including the title of Officer of the Federal Republic (OFR).
