Borno farmers massacre: Legislate laws against terrorism – NASS Clerk tells State lawmakers

Following Saturday’s massacre of 43 rice farmers in Jere Local Government Area of Borno State, the Clerk to the National Assembly, Architect Ojo Amos Olatunde, has charged State lawmakers to rise to the occasion of legislating against terrorism in their various States.

Speaking on Monday in Abuja when the Inter Parliamentary Relations Committee of the Oyo State House of Assembly paid him a courtesy call, he said terrorism has become a huge challenge to the nation which desires legislative attention of States.

According to him, “the killing of farmers in Borno is a good sign that we legislate to protect our peasant farmers.”

The Clerk, who described the visit as the second this year, coming after Borno State Assembly, despite the COVID-19 pandemic, said “this is a means of developing our democracy, not Oyo state alone.”

“As you move from one segment of the National Assembly to another, ensure that you meet with our Appropriation Committee to see that the Legislature itself is funded”, adding that “without money you can’t develop our democracy”.

He admonished the committee members not to forget that they “have the interest of the public at heart”, adding that the Speaker of the House of Representatives has always said that “nation building is a joint task”.

Earlier, the leader of the Inter Parliamentary Committee, Hon. Olamide Akinajo brought the felicitation of the Speaker of Oyo State House of Assembly and said he was confident that the visit will create a great working relationship with the National Assembly.
