Barau suspects ‘Ranches Commission Bill’ targeted at relocating Fulani herders to States of origin

Deputy President of the Senate, Jibrin Barau, suffered humiliation on Wednesday as his opposition to a bill for an act to establish National Animal Husbandry and Ranches Commission, which was sponsored by Senator Titus Tartenger Zam, from Benue State was ignored by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.

Barau in his contribution after Senators took turns to speak on the general principle of the bill, said, it was targeted at relocating Fulani herders to their States of origin, if it eventually passed and the Commission is established.

He feared that some Fulani herders do not know way to their States of origin, hence, their choice of living wherever they wished in Nigeria was in line with the Constitution and any attempt to relocate them as envisaged in the bill, amount to breach of sections of the Constitution.
The concerned lawmaker maintained that the bill was in breach of the Constitution of Nigeria, 1999 as amended, particularly in regard to choice of residence, insisting that nobody should be denied on where he or she chose to live.
Barau insisted that Fulani herders should be left alone to live wherever they chosed to.
Meanwhile, Barau seemed to be the only man canvassing for Fulani herders, even as majority of Senators from the North who spoke on the bill supported its establishment.
According to him, he benefitted from living in a place that was not his place of origin, and hence, Fulani herders in any part of the country should be allowed to live wherever they chose to.
He said: “There is a snag in this bill, there is a problem because you can not stop any Nigerian from living in any area that he so wishes.
“The relevant section of the constitution has been read. I saw something just a few days ago: Senator Natasha visited a Fulani settlement in her senatorial zone. Those people do not have any home except that place. They have been there for so long. They have been part and parcel of that society.
“Now, to tell them to move to their state of origin, where is their state of origin?
“Now, for us as political leaders, I would like you to look at that. Who is the current Senator of FCT? She is a Yoruba native, but she has won the election here. Nobody told her to return to her state.
“I won my first election in Tarauni Federal Constituency to the House of Representatives in 1999 from Kano Central, but I am from Kano North. Nobody told me to go back to Kano North, so why do we now tell herders to go back to their states of Origin?
My friend Zam, understand that this is not consonant with our constitution; your bill is good. I like this bill, but this aspect should be removed. We should remove it. I advise my friend Senator Zam to stand this bill down for a consultation, for better drafting, so that it goes in consonant with our constitution.
“Mr President, I will tell you some of these Fulanis; if you ask them where is their state of origin, they have even forgotten; they look at themselves as Nigerians.
“We should address the issue to reflect wherever someone is, it’s his place, and he can do his business there. So, Mr President, I advise this bill to be stepped down for further consultation.”
Barau’s spirited effort to shut down the bill failed as majority lawmakers ayes the bill when Senate President, Godswill Akpabio put to voice vote.
The bill having passed second reading was committed to the relevant Committee for public hearing.

Rivers Assembly issues arrest warrant for RSIEC chairman, commissioners in renewed battle

The Chairman of Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, RSIEC, Justice Adolphus Enebeli, Rtd has been ordered by the State House of Assembly to be arrested following his failure to appear on Monday.

Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule approved the warrant of arrest after deliberations by the members of his refusal to appear first after the earlier 48 hours ultimatum and 78 hours deadline which the RSIEC chairman still snubbed House invitation.

During Monday’s plenary session, Speaker Martin Amaewhule and the House unanimously approved the warrant, reinforcing their demand for accountability from the RSIEC officials.
The Assembly members are contending that the appointment of the Chairman was illegal having not been approved by the State House of Assembly in line with the appointment of political office holders in Rivers State.
One of the Commissioner in RSIEC in charge of transportation, logistics and Store, Ibiemebo Evelyn Thompson, on Monday resigned citing Supreme Court judgment that invalidated the October 5, Local Government Council elections in Rivers State.
Her resignation follows that of two other commissioners, Lazberry Nnah and Professor Simeon Weli, who stepped down last week for the same reason.
With the RSIEC Chairman, Justice Enebeli, yet to respond to the Assembly’s summons, it remains unclear what his next course of action will be.

Commonwealth Day 2025: NASS reiterates commitment to deepening democracy, global unity

Nigeria’s National Assembly has joined the rest of the world to commemorate the 2025 Commonwealth Day and reiterated its commitment to deepening democracy, peace, and sustainable development.

This year’s theme, “Together We Thrive,” the observance highlighted Nigeria’s active role in the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) and its dedication to fostering youth engagement and international cooperation.

Delivering the keynote address on behalf of Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Mark Esset, Chairman, House Committee on Inter-Parliamentary Affairs, reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to the shared values of the 56-member Commonwealth.
“The National Assembly remains dedicated to strengthening democracy by supporting policies that promote social and economic inclusion, human rights, and environmental sustainability. We will continue to engage in Commonwealth parliamentary dialogue to share best practices and learn from other nations to enhance our governance,” he stated.
Hon. Esset highlighted Nigeria’s longstanding participation in the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), recalling that the country hosted the 56th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Abuja in 2006. He noted that Nigeria remains an active player in Commonwealth affairs, with key representatives such as Hon. Tolu Sadipe serving as the West Africa Regional Representative and Hon. Mark Esset as the Branch Representative.
He also commended Hon. Zainab Gimba, who recently completed her tenure as Chairperson of the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians (CWP).
The Speaker reiterated the National Assembly’s support for recognizing the CPA as an international organization rather than a UK-registered charity, noting that a bill to that effect has already passed in the UK House of Commons.
He further expressed concerns about political instability in parts of Africa, particularly the resurgence of military rule and the displacement of citizens due to conflict. He called for stronger Commonwealth cooperation in upholding democratic principles and human rights.
Another important highlight of the celebration was the presence of 60 students from four schools, reflecting the Commonwealth’s commitment to youth inclusion in governance.
Hon. Esset called on the House Committee on Youth Affairs and the Directorate of Inter-Parliamentary Affairs to establish a framework for mentoring young people who participate in such events, encouraging their involvement in legislative activities.
“Our young people are the future of our democracy. We must not only educate them on governance but also empower them through mentorship initiatives like the Legislative Mentorship Initiative (LMI),” he said.
Delivering his remarks, Engr. B.A. Yero, Deputy Clerk of the National Assembly, who represented Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, Esq., emphasized the significance of the Commonwealth Day celebration.
“The theme ‘Together We Thrive’ reminds us that despite differences in geography, culture, and history, we share common aspirations for justice, equality, and progress. Addressing challenges such as climate change, insecurity, and economic instability requires collaboration,” he stated.
He urged the youth to embrace teamwork and innovation, describing them as agents of positive change in Nigeria and the broader Commonwealth.
As part of the observance, Elder Godwin Okon Ekpenyong, Secretary, Directorate of Inter-Parliamentary Relations and Protocol, delivered the King’s Commonwealth Day Message 2025, originally published on March 9.
The message reflected on the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, paying tribute to the 1.5 million Commonwealth soldiers who fought for global peace. The King emphasized the importance of international cooperation in promoting peace, human rights, and environmental sustainability.
“In these uncertain times, the Commonwealth remains a unique platform where nations—large and small, young and old—come together as one family. Our greatest strength lies in our unity and shared responsibility for a better future,” the message read.
The 2025 Commonwealth Day observance at the National Assembly reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to democratic governance, global cooperation, and youth empowerment. With strong parliamentary engagement, calls for unity, and a renewed focus on mentorship, the event embodied the spirit of “Together We Thrive,” inspiring a future built on shared progress and inclusivity.

Sexual Harassment Saga: Natasha’s beauty a challenge to her – Ex-Senator Ogunlewe

Ex-Senator and former Minister of Works, Adeseye Ogunlewe, reacting to sexual harassment allegation claimed that the beauty of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, remains a huge challenge to her in her political career.

He said men will find it difficult to ignore her presence anywhere she finds herself.

Ogunlewe stated this while featuring on Arise Television on Monday, remarking that female Senators do no always feel inferior to their male counterpart and often assert themselves in political discussions.
The former lawmaker in the Senate stated that Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s physical appearance sets her apart in a way that affects how men relate to her, a fact she must realise.
“The female Senators did not look at themselves as if they were inferior to men. They were even up to the task. If you even mention that Itadewa is a woman, the response you are going to get will make you ashamed of yourself because they will stand up to you,” he said.
Referring specifically to Akpoti-Uduaghan, he added, “But the beauty of Distinguished Senator Natasha is a problem to her.
When asked, “How can beauty be a problem?”
He said, “You know, men—when somebody who is pretty passes by you, your attitude will change. You can smile, you can wink, but you may not talk to her. But her beauty is a problem, there’s no doubt about that.”
When pressed further on how beauty could be an issue, Ogunlewe responded, “To men, when she’s passing, there’s no way a man will not look at that woman.”
He defended his stance by stating that it is natural for men to notice attractive women, adding, “It is a natural thing for a man to look at beautiful women. How can you be a man, and a beautiful woman is passing, and you close your eyes?”
Despite being questioned on whether his views were misogynistic, Ogunlewe insisted that his observations were based on natural human tendencies.
“It may be, you might term it that way, but it is inbuilt,” he said.
