ASUU strike: NCWS urge gov’t, ASUU to resolve lingering issues

The National President, National Council for Women Societies, Hajiya Lami Adamu Lau has urged the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to look for ways to resolve the lingering strike action that has kept students at home for more than three months.

The National President made the call at a media briefing to roll out events marking the International Day of the African Child and the Women in National Service (WINSERVE 2022) on Thursday in Abuja.

ASUU embarked on a one-month warning strike on Monday February 14, 2022, which later led to indefinite strike, to compel the Federal Government to honour the agreement it signed with the union under a Memorandum of Action (MoA) in December 2020.

Addressing journalists, Hajia Lau lamented how the Nigerian Government and ASUU executives have been insensitive on the plight of Nigerian students stressing that they (students) are now idle and redundant thereby exposing them to negative tendencies.

In an emotion laden voice, the NCWS boss however charged government at all levels to take the education of Nigerian youths seriously just the way they do with political campaigns as that’s the only way the future of the nation can be secured.

She therefore called on leaders to carry out their duties with the clear conscience and the fear of God.

“We are in a better position to be in the forefront in matters affecting Nigerians, their lives and livelihood, particularly our teeming Women and Children.

“We know Government alone cannot meet-up with the compelling needs of National and Gender Developments, so we gladly accepted to partner with FGN-NIMEC Projects Office, towards tackling such critical challenges like: Gender Violence (particularly raping), Drug Abuse, Out-of-School Children, Youth Unemployment and related social vices.

“On the issues of National Security, we are appealing to our politicians to fear God and face these problems squarely, in the same way they are facing Party Delegates. Just imagine how Billions of Tax-Payers money are squandered, in the recent weeks, during parties primaries. If issues of Security and Education are taken in like manner, Nigeria would have been a Heaven on this Earth.

“Haba! Let’s all fear Allah, and discharge our individual and official obligations. Almighty God does not sleep. We must be aware that our nation is drifting while our leaders are busy engaged in selfish and greedy political mis-adventures.

“We are also calling on the Federal Government and ASUU to please re-open our Universities, so that our children will be fully engaged. Incessant crises in our Educational Institutions are big threats to National Security.

Children’s continuous stay at home is very worrisome to us (Mothers). It makes them idle, redundant and therefore vulnerable to all forms of violence and negative tendencies.”

Speaking further on the forthcoming twin events, she said it is a burning desire of NCWS and its traditional partners to speed-up the process of implementing the United Nations Resolution on Gender Affirmative Action (Beijing 95) and the UN-Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“No wonder, therefore, we accepted to be Co-Organizers and Co-Hosts, for the laudable initiative of marking the International Day of the African Child and the forthcoming Women-In-National Service Week(WINSERVE).

“These twin-events are very significant to the promotion and defence of Women’s and Children’s Rights, in all ramifications.

“It is on record that the twin maladies of Violent Rape Against Women and Neglect of Children’s rights to existence and basic amenities like Education, Health and even Security are at their lowest ebb in Africa: In fact Nigeria has the highest Out-Of-School-Children, in the whole world!

“This is very sad, clearly worrisome and therefore, unacceptable. We are equally witnesses to widespread cases of Raping and related forms of Violence against innocent Women, mostly minors, every day on the rise, at an alarming proportion.

“This is the very essence of marking the Day of the African Child. Today, is thus a moment for sober reflection, the day to reawaken and sensitize both Governments and Non-Governmental

Institutions, to be alert to their responsibilities.

“We must begin to accord maximum priorities to fight the twin monsters of Gender Violence and shameless neglect of our Children’s rights.

“I wish to call on all State Governors, to please speed-up the process of adopting the Child Rights, must take a cognitive and collective action on this matter. It is long overdue,” she added.

He stated this following Natasha’s claims during a rally in her Kogi Central Senatorial District that he recruited the former Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello to assassinate her outside Abuja.

At the rally on Tuesday 1st April, 2025 which was monitored by CAPITAL POST in Lokoja, Natasha accused the former Governor Yahaya Bello, having been contacted late in the night of March 12, 2025 to orchestrated ‘recall and assassination’ of her outside Abuja.

Natasha said she has intelligence reports that when she is killed in her Constituency, “it will look as if it’s her people that killed her.”

Though Bello was yet to issue a statement debunking the allgations or otherwise, Senate President on his part denied the allegation and described it as falsehood and inflammatory.

Reacting in a statement by the Special Adviser on Media and Publici, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh on Friday, Akpabio accused former Senator representing Adamawa North Senatorial, Elisha Abbo of toeing the similar part of blackmail, saying barely 24 hours later, on April 2, 2025, Elisha Abbo appeared on Arise Television to revive a previously withdrawn claim that Senator Akpabio “manipulated the judiciary” to secure his removal from the Senate.

The statement said: “Nigerians will recall that Mr. Abbo, in 2023, publicly retracted this same accusation and tendered an apology after acknowledging that his claims were founded on incorrect assumptions.

“His removal from office was the outcome of a constitutionally grounded judicial decision by the Court of Appeal, which independently determined that he was not duly elected to represent Adamawa North.

“In a further twist, Mr. Abbo also alleged that he was denied his entitlements by the Senate President. This, too, is categorically false. Entitlements such as salaries and allowances are processed strictly through administrative and legal procedures.

“The Senate President does not and cannot unilaterally approve or deny such requests. Any delays or rejections would have been based solely on due diligence and compliance with established protocols.

“The timing, tone, and striking similarity of these coordinated attacks point clearly to a politically motivated smear campaign. These individuals—backed by undisclosed interests—appear united in a desperate effort to undermine the credibility of the Senate and its leadership and intended to distract from their own personal and political shortcomings and failings.

“Senator Godswill Akpabio remains undeterred. As a statesman devoted to national unity, institutional integrity, and the rule of law, he will not be distracted by malicious falsehoods or inflammatory rhetoric.

“Regardless of the necessity for legal redress, formal letters of demand, seeking immediate public retractions, apologies, and compensation for reputational harm, are underway to be served on both Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and Mr Elisha Abbo.

“We call on the Nigerian public in particular and the International Community to reject these baseless and provocative narratives. The Senate, under Senator Akpabio’s leadership, remains focused on its constitutional mandate: to promote legislative excellence, safeguard democratic values, and deliver meaningful progress for the Nigerian people”, the statement concluded.

Assassination Plot: Natasha’s manipulative theatrics to whip public sentiments worrisome – Akpabio

Published

on

President of the Senate, Godswill Obot Akpabio has accused the suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of manipulative theatrics on the sensibilities of the Nigerian public to whip sentiments.

He said his attention has been drawn to claims by the embattled lawmaker representing Kogi Central Senatorial District that he recruited the former Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello to plot her assassination outside Abuja.

In a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the Senate President, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh and made available to CAPITAL POST on Friday in Abuja, Akpabio described Natasha’s claims as inflammatory and highly condemnation.

Denying the accusation, Akpabio noted that the outrageous and false accusation in Natasha’s address to her constituents on Tuesday 1st April, 2025 was meant to malign him lately.

Part of the statement read: “The Office of the President of the Senate strongly condemns the recent baseless, false and inflammatory accusation made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, in which she falsely alleged that the Senate President, His Excellency, Senator Godswill Akpabio, was involved in a plot to assassinate her.

“While speaking in Kogi State on April 1, 2025, the suspended Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan recklessly and maliciously claimed that Senator Godswill Akpabio “recruited” former Governor Yahaya Bello to “assassinate her in Kogi State rather than in Abuja.”

“This outrageous accusation is not only false but a complete fabrication and deeply irresponsible and dangerous attempt to provoke public unrest, attract media attention, and discredit the person and office of the President of the Senate for ulterior motives.

“It is important to remind the public that this same individual had previously made an unsubstantiated accusation of sexual harassment against Senator Akpabio—a claim she seem to have abandoned without explanation.

“Having failed to gain traction with that narrative, she has now escalated her campaign of misinformation to a deadly and defamatory dimension.

Akpabio further explained how Natasha had engaged in this troubling pattern in years past, hence, attention of Nigerians have been drawn to such filthy games that shouldn’t be taken seriously.

“This pattern of deliberate falsehoods and manipulative theatrics reveals a troubling willingness to exploit public sensitivities through recurring victimhood narratives.

“It is a matter of public record that she has previously made assassination allegations against former Governor Yaya Bello and others in 2019 and 2023, along with multiple unsubstantiated claims of sexual harassment against other dignitaries.

“Her recurring persecution narrative and evident lying complex should not be weaponized to malign individuals or destroy hard-earned reputations.

Interestingly, this latest reckless allegation is not occurring in isolation”, he concluded.
