APC North Central leaders uncover planned ‘politically motivated attack’ on Akume, other APC leaders, warn trouble makers of consequences

The leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) North Central zone has warned certain allegedly sponsored support groups to desist from attacking the person and reputation of former Benue State governor and Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume.

The zonal leaders issued the warning in a statement following a meeting with the party’s state chairmen in Abuja on Friday.

The statement was jointly signed by the APC North Central National Vice Chairman, Hon. Mu’azu Bawa Rijau, and Zonal Secretary, Hon. Yakubu Adamu.
According to the zonal leaders, some unregistered and unrecognized groups have been using the party’s name to launch media attacks on prominent figures within the zone.
Emphasizing that no group is authorized to speak on party matters in the zone except its leadership, the leaders passed a vote of confidence in Senator Akume, as well as all the governors and political leaders in the region.
“The attention of the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), North Central has been drawn to the activities of some unregistered and un-recognised support groups who are using the name of the party in the zone to attack, insult and disparage the persons, characters and reputations of some eminent leaders of the party in the zone on the media.
“Of particular attention was the recent unwarranted attacks on the person and office of our esteemed and revered leader, the former Executive Governor of Benue State and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume CFR by some sponsored groups.
“Rising from a crucial meeting of the party’s zonal leaders and state chairmen of the zone on Friday 7th February 2025 in Abuja, the zonal party leadership wishes to condemn and unequivocally reject this development. We make bold to say that these groups are not only un-recognised, they are nothing but usurpers and interlopers.”
The zonal leadership reaffirmed that only the officially recognized structure, as constituted by the National Working Committee (NWC), is permitted to speak on behalf of the party in the zone.
“The leadership of the party in the zone wish to pass a vote of confidence on our leaders, particularly Distinguished Senator George Akume and all our five elected governors in the zone, whose contributions to the growth of the party in the zone and indeed the country have been acknowledged by all and sundry.
“The zonal leadership of the party as constituted and recognised by the National Working Committee (NWC) remains the only authorized organ to speak or comment on activities of the party in the zone. No other group or set of individuals are permitted to carry out such functions.”
The statement also praised the leadership of the five APC governors in the zone, commending their infrastructural and human development efforts.
“The zonal leadership of the party also commend the sterling leadership being provided by all the five governors of the party in the zone. We are proud of the various unprecedented infrastructural and human development going on in all our five controlled states in the zone. All our governors in the zone have remained shining stars in delivering dividends of democracy to our people.
“The meeting also applauded the Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje-led National Working Committee (NWC), for providing leadership and direction for the party. We reaffirmed our unalloyed loyalty to the party leadership.”
Condemning the alleged attackers, the zonal leaders issued a stern warning for them to desist or face legal consequences.
“We are by this statement warning these groups to desist forthwith from using the name of North Central zone of the party in any guise to disparage, attack and insult our leaders. Failure to do so will attract the full weight of the law.”
The zonal leadership further urged all party members to remain steadfast in supporting the party’s vision and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda.”
