In a statement Mumuni issued through his Media Aide, Rasheed Abubakar and obtained on Monday, he called for extensive media literacy on Shariah – Islamic law, stating that there seems to be misconception about Shariah in certain regions of the country.

Mumuni, who is also an Islamic scholar was reacting to recent clamour for the establishment of Shari’ah Arbitration Panels in the region to handle civil matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and disputes over contractual agreements between Muslims.

The APC stalwart advised governors opposing Shariah to change their mind, but rather dialogue with Muslim community in the Southwest states.

The APC chieftain in his reaction, advised the governors that opposed its establishment to engage the leadership of the Muslims in the Southwest states, adding that Yoruba Muslims have integrated Islamic practices into their cultural structure since ages past.

The APC chieftain noted that the yearning for Shariah law in Ekiti, Oyo and Ogun States cannot be downplayed, stressing that dialogue with Muslim communities by governors of those States were the way to go in the interest of peace and to avoid hostility and conflicts that may lead to anarchy.

“What the Muslims are demanding is clear. They want a panel that will handle their personal affairs, such as marriage, divorce, and inheritance, among others. They aren’t demanding Shari’ah for criminal acts such as arms amputation, but civil law, which is guaranteed by the constitution.

“Therefore, there is a need for the government to dialogue with the leadership of the Muslims, especially MUSWEN and allow any willing Muslim to follow the dictate of their religion.”

Mumuni who is also a security expert urged the Muslim leadership across communities to sensitise their members and use the minbar (pulpits) on Friday, adding, “Some Muslims surprisingly kicked against the introduction of Shari’ah are doing that out of ignorance and understanding.

“Some don’t even know that the Shari’ah panel has been existing in some states for years. There is a need for massive media literacy among Muslims while their leaders engage the government to avoid impending conflicts.”
