Since the governor reconciled Channels Television Reporter, Mr. Pius Angbo with his Medical Doctor wife, he has not rested from tantrums being thrown by those who felt bad over the development.

The group leaders, Elaigwu Ikwue, Hundu Bunde and Esther Akule in A joint statement issued and sent to CAPITAL POST on Wednesday posited that the governor breached no law in his effort.

They described the position of critics as meddlesome interlopers who would stop at nothing to discredit the reconciliatory effort of the Governor, who acted as a father and a peace maker.

The statement reads:

“We the undersigned groups, having carefully studied the scenario that has played out since Dr Mrs Ifeyinwa Angbo, wife of Mr Pius Angbo of Channels Television raised the alarm of abuse by her husband and the Executive Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom decided to play the role of a father by reconciling the couple and the unjust reactions that have followed hereby state as follows:

“That Governor Ortom acted in the best interest of the affected family and everyone else who loves matrimonial peace and harmony.

“That Governor Ortom has shown a great sense of leadership in uniting that family and further affirmed that he is truly a father figure to all Benue people.

“That the Governor has further demonstrated that he is a humane leader who cares about the future of Benue children. His intervention has saved the four children of the Angbos from the uncertain future that was starring them in the face of their parents were allowed to fall apart.

“We challenge those criticising Gov Ortom’s intervention to tell us which section of the law the Governor violated by reconciling Mr and Mrs Angbo. What did the society lose as a result of the Governor’s decision to ensure that a medical doctor and her journalist husband live in peace?

“It is important to emphasize that the Governor’s intervention has saved a marriage which was at the verge of collapse. He also has saved careers of the couple. Above all, he has brought peace and happiness to a young family.

“What Governor Ortom has done in the lives of the Angbos deserves commendation and not criticism, and what the couple needs is our support and prayers for a peaceful home.

“We commend Governor Ortom for this selfless act and urge him not to be discouraged by a few dissenting voices from sadists and enemies of peace.

“We can only imagine what would have happened to that young marriage with four kids if the couple was not saved from further crises by Gov Ortom considering the numerous cases of insecurity we have in this country were most youths pepertrating crimes are from failed marriages.

“We acknowledge that domestic and gender violence is highly condemnable and should not be condoned under any guise, but when a family is about to collapse it should be saved by whatever means also considering the damage that comes with products of broken homes.

“We strongly condemn insinuations from certain quarters that Governor Ortom wanted to shield Pius Angbo from facing justice. Those pushing this line of thought are ignorant of the Bible injunction which states in Matthew 5:9 “Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God.”

“We wonder why some persons have chosen to take medicine on what is not their headache. Mrs Angbo has already told people to leave them alone, that they are now back and happy together. Why are other people still playing the role of meddlesome interlopers? They can’t cry more that the bereaved. Has Governor stopped anyone from seeking justice in the case?

“We however must caution all interested CSOs and agencies wishing to take up the case not to lose sight of the fact that in accepting the apology of her husband, Mrs Angbo asked for our prayers to help her strengthen her young marriage that has produced four little children.

“They should also note that preserving the marriage is the wish of their client and Gov Ortom has set the pace for us all to follow.”

Reports said, the Commissioners were accused of contractual breach in the ongoing construction of 140 housing units for the Izzo and Amaze communities, which were displaced by the Ezilo/Ezza Ezilo communal crisis in Ishielu Local Government Area.

The names of embattled Commissioners are: Professor Omari Omaka (Tertiary Education), Victor Chukwu (Environment), Ifeanyi Ogbuewu (Culture and Tourism), Uchenna Igwe (Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters), Moses Ekuma (Health), and Felix Igboke (Project Monitoring).

They were first declared wanted following their disappearance from the State Executive Committee meeting when the matter became known in the media, and the Ebonyi State immediately launched manhunt before they were eventually arrested.

Commenting on the development, Ilang Donatus, Chairman of the State Executive Council Committee on the Izzo and Amaze Housing Project, stated that the action was taken due to the officials’ and contractors’ failure to adhere to contract terms.

Donatus noted that the officials are delaying the housing project, which Governor Nwifuru had planned to commission in celebration of his second anniversary in office.

Donatus emphasised the governor’s frustration over the slow pace of construction, noting that the housing initiative was designed to provide relief to victims of communal crises.

He was quoted as saying, “The governor is not happy over the pace of the work, which ought to have been completed. The government has decided to clamp down on the contractors and commissioners who were mandated to supervise those projects.

“As you can see, our governor is a man with a passionate heart, he likes giving succour, hence the building of those houses for the victims of the communal crisis. He is not happy that the project is delayed and has ordered to arrest of all the commissioners who are supposed to ensure the speedy completion of the housing units.

Adding to the concerns, Mrs. Maria Okohu, Special Assistant to the Governor on Women Mobilization (Ebonyi Central) and a member of the Executive Council Committee, described the situation as an act of sabotage.

She stressed that failure to complete the housing project on schedule undermines the governor’s development agenda for the state.

In response, the state government has vowed to continue its crackdown, warning that further arrests will be made until all implicated commissioners and contractors are held accountable.

Reports also suggest that the Nigerian police have issued invitations to several officials who were not present during the committee’s enforcement visits.

Upon inquiry, Ebonyi State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Joshua Ukandu, stated that he had no knowledge of the arrest or detention of the accused commissioners and the suspended council chairman.

When questioned about whether the Command had invited the officials following the governor’s directive, the police spokesperson responded, “We don’t have any commissioner in our custody. I’m not aware of any invitation and I have asked and I was told we don’t have any commissioner in custody. I will still ask about the invitation but for now, I don’t know anything of such.”
