Unijos female Professor wins Plateau South Bye-election, defeat former Speaker

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC ) has declared Professor of French from University of Jos and the Candidate of the All Progresssives Congress (APC) Prof. Nora Daduut winner of the Plateau South Senatorial District Bye-election conducted on Saturday.

Change of Name

It would be recalled that the senatorial seat became vacant following the death of the former Senator, Late Ignatius Longjan earlier this year.

The returning officer, Prof. Idris Amali who announced the result, said the APC candidate Prof. Nora Daduut scored a total of 83,151 votes to beat her rival from the Peoples Democratic Party and former Speaker of Plateau State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. George Daika who scored 70, 838 votes with a margin of 12,313 votes.

The results declared has shown the APC candidate winning in Quapan, Mikang, Shendam and Wase while PDP candidate only wins Langtang North and Langtang South and couldn’t win his own Mikang Local Government Area.

Governor Simon Lalong while reacting to the outcome of the election, said the victory of Prof. Nora Dadu’ut was not surprising as the APC is well rooted in the whole state particularly the Southern Senatorial District

Lalong in a Press Statement on Sunday signed by his Director of Press and Public Affairs Dr.Makut Simon congratulated Prof. Nora Dadu’ut candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for making history as the first female Senator-elect in Plateau State.

He congratulated Prof. Nora whom he believes will give quality representation to the people of the Southern Senatorial District and also represent the interest of the State at the red chamber.

He commended INEC and security agencies for working assiduously towards a successful election. He said the electorate also deserve special commendation for conducting themselves peacefully and ensuring that the execise was devoid of violence and malpractice.

Lalong also called on other political parties and candidates who lost the election to rally round the winner in the best interest of the zone and Plateau State as a whole.

The Minister for Women Affairs and Social Development, Dame Pauline Tallen has expressed joy over the emergence of the first female senator from Plateau State under the auspices of the APC, saying is coming at a time when she’s the Minister of Women Affairs.

According to her, it’s high time women are given more opportunities in the political space to change the course of things and serve the masses differently.

Tallen who is an advocate for the 30 percent affirmative action which seeks inclusion of women in leadership positions at all levels commended Governor Simon Bako Lalong, the APC family on the Plateau and the entire good people of Plateau South Senatorial District for supporting a woman to emerge as Senator Elect to represent Plateau Senatorial District in the National Assembly.

She also promised to bestow a ‘He for She Award’ on Governor Simon Bako Lalong for supporting the course of women and being gender sensitive even as she disclosed that plans have been concluded by the Plateau State Government to give more political appointments to women.
