NBC Q2 reports shows 716 infractions on Broadcast code as advert tops with 51%
National Broadcasting Commission, NBC has released the second quarter reports on the activities of broadcast media houses between April – June with 716 infractions.
In a circular issued by the management of the NBC approved by Ag. Director General National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, Professor Armstrong Aduku Idachaba says the fines are in line with the breach of the broadcast code of the Commission.
According to the Ag. Director General, 22 were financial penalty representing 2%, while the chunk of the offence with 97% amounting to 694 were offences ranging from advertisements, warnings, cautions, obscenity, technical offences, unprofessionalism, unverified claims, political breaches, and hate speech.
The release mentioned advertisements to have taken the lead of infractions with 51%, 17% unverified claims to cure by tradomedics and preachers, while unprofessionalism by conducts, news story and programming as well as current affairs earn 12%.
Twenty (22) penalties were imposed on nineteen (19) stations which offences ranges from misinformation, wrong or false health advisory on COVID-19, as well as endorsement of products and services by presenters with fines ranges between 250,000.00 and 300,000.00 on the FM stations.
Breeze FM Lafia, Adaba FM Lafia, Midland FM Ilorin, Royal FM Ilorin, and Wave FM.
Others are Sobi FM Ilorin, Edo Broadcasting Service EBS Benin, City FM Onitsha, FRCN FM Nsukka, King FM Ibadan, Fad FM Calabar, Wazobia Max TV Port-Harcourt and Radio Rivers Portharcourt.
Others that flouted through endorsement of products and services by presenters, are Wish FM, Port-Harcourt, Wazobia FM Port-Harcourt, Portharcourt people’s FM Yenegoa, Crowther (Core) FM Abuja, for indecent music, while Blaze FM Oraifite, and Wish FM, Portharcourt was penalized over Ponzi , poor handling of phone in programmes scheme respectively.
This developement according to reports, was released by the Directorate of Broadcast Monitoring on weekly basis, via 10 zonal offices in 25 states, covering about 600 functional Radio stations in Nigeria.
