Fleeing Abdulrasheed Maina arrested in Niger Republic
The former Chairman of Pension Reform Task Team, Abdulrasheed Maina who jumped bail over the alledged N2 billion money laundering has been arrested in Niger Republic.
He was arrested on Monday evening in Niger Republic by the operatives of Niger Republic intelligence service in collaboration with Nigeria’s anti-corruption agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.
PR Nigeria, a media outlet reported the arrest, while detailing on how the cooperation between Niger Republic and the Federal Republic of Nigeria made it possible for the rarest of the fleeing Maina.
Sources within the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission noted that Mr. Abdulrasheed Maina had left Nigeria about two weeks ago for Niger Republic, a situation that prompted the under cover security operatives of both countries working to effect his arrest.
Maina is facing a 12-count charge of money related cases to the tune of N2 billion before Justice Okon Abang Federal High Court in Abuja, but had severally refused to appear before the Court.
CAPITAL POST reports that Senator Ali Ndume representing Borno South Senatorial district who surtied for him was sent to prison for his inability to produce Maina in Court.
Ndume was bailed on Friday after spending five days.
Maina’s case came to fore after the agency alleged that the former chairman of the defunct Pension Reform Task Team, used the account of the firm for money laundering to the tune of about N2 billion, part of which he used to acquire landed properties in Abuja and elsewhere.
Justice Abang, in a ruling, said he chose to grant the senator bail based on his record of good behaviour before the court, notwithstanding that the other grounds of his bail application failed.
