Court jails 47 year old Gombe lawmaker for perjury
Member representing Billiri/Balanga Federal Constituency of Gombe State, Hon Victor Mela has been convicted for lying under oath in the Indepwndent National Electoral Commission (INEC) form which he filed to contest election.
Since he contested the 2019 general election which he won, the 43 year old lawmaker has never known peace, but has been frequenting the Court over forgery and perjury on his dual citizenship.
Friday conviction in Court has put paid to his being a citizen of Britain and that of Nigeria, having possessed British passport, a situation that doesn’t qualified to contest any election.
The lawmaker’s sentencing on Friday was however with option of fine.
Born 1973, Mela earned a degree in geology from the University of Jos in 1999 and a masters in sedimentology and petroleum geology from the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University in 2006.
He was elected to the House of Representatives in 2019 and is vice-chairman of the solid minerals committee.
