Senate tells Police to protect EndSARS from hoodlums

The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday directed the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu to protect EndSARS protesters to avoid hoodlums’ infiltration.

The lawmakers also adopted a prayer of a motion brought by Senator Biodun Olujimi expressing concerns on the destruction of lives and properties dimension of the protesters, saying, President Muhammadu Buhari should immediately address the nation on the current nationwide protests by youths against police brutality and bad governance.

Change of Name

The Senate said #EndSARS protesters have genuine reason which government has identified with some of their demands, but they needed to prevent hoodlums from hijacking their genuine action, while effort would be orchestrated towards ending their protests.

Olujimi, while addressing journalists, stated that there was need to restore the confidence of people towards government action.

She said: “even Senators many, Nigerians’ opinion concerning us is different, we need to do something”.

The federal lawmakers further urged the protesters to leave the streets, saying that they have made a point which are being considered by the Federal government.

They also urged Buhari to immediately set up a judicial panel of enquiry made up of eminent Nigerians that would be respected by the youths to identify the notorious SARS operatives and ensure their arrest and prosecution

While commending the Senators on their wise comments, the President of the Senate, Dr. Ahmad Lawan advised the protesters to shield their sword in the interest of peace. Acknowledged that the fact that their interest is known by the government, while they should allowed government to consider their prayers.
