Ex-Federal lawmaker urged politicians to salvage Nigeria’s sinking democracy

Former House of Representatives member and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) gubernatorial running mate in 2019 general election in Nasarawa State, Mohammed Onawo has called on politicians at all levels to be responsible and do away with impunity in the interest of political development of the country.
He made the call in an exculusive interview with CAPITAL POST in his residence in Lafia.
The former lawmaker lampooned politicians for being selfish and ready to move the country forward by using their position to surprise others for their personal gain.
He drew the attention of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to woken up to salvaging the nation’s democracy from sinking.
Onawo who served two term at the Green Chamber representing Awe/Doma/Keana Federal Constituency (PDP), insisted that for the democracy to survive all hands must be on deck irrespective of political affiliation.
“Fairness, justice and equity for all manners of people is the key to sustainable democracy process in Nigeria.
He said impunity is the order of the day in the current democracy, adding that the ongoing developments would spelt doom to the entire process in Nigeria democratic process, calling for the retrospection of all political parties.
According to the former speaker of Nasarawa House of Assembly, he described absence of fairness by political parties to either aspirants or candidates as a major setback in political arena.
He salute the courage of Edo State people for re-electing Godwin Obaseki for second term under the platform of PDP, despite he was rejected by APC.
“This has clearly shown that electorate have started knowing their constitutional rights which allowed them to vote candidates of their choice and not political party.
On the allegations raised by some political gladiators in Edo state, he accused Governor Obaseki for presenting fake documents, which he described it as political gimmicks.
Onawo questioned that if those documents presented to INEC, in 2015 by Obaseki were not genuine where was APC?.
“Now that he decided to quit the party because of injustice done to him and defected to the PDP where he got justice, they suddenly remembered or alledging that he owned a fake documents. This has no doubt become impunity of the highest order. He explained.
‘’I will not speak for Obaseki over certificate forgery, but we should know that the University he graduated from said he was their student.”
