Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Smart Adeyemi has been told that his insistence on the introduction of Sharia law in tackling corruption in Nigeria was not part of the assignment that took him to the National Assembly, hence, he should desist from making comments on laws that are obnoxious.

Kogi based group – Kogi Renaissance Group (KRG) in a statement on Tuesday dared Senator Smart Adeyemi to go ahead to submit memoranda to the Constitutional Review Committee headed by the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege in order to enshrine Sharia laws into the Constitution.

Change of Name

In a statement by the group which was signed by Ahmadu Mohammed and made available to CAPITAL POST in Lokoja stated that Kogi lawmaker’s commitment to introducing Sharia laws into the nation’s legal jurisprudence was appalling and in apparent reteogression.

The statement said: “More often than not, Senator Smart Adeyemi has insisted on introduction of Sharia law as a way of tackling corruption. The point he is making is capable of dragging the country back to the old age.

“Last weekend, he spoke at the retreat by the Senate Press Corps which held at the Lugard, Lokoja where Smart Adeyemi said Sharia law is the way to go in dealing with corruption in Nigeria.

“In Kogi State, we are wondering if that was the assignment he was voted for. Adeyemi want to turn the country to an Islamic state, even as Zamfara State could not prosecute the Sharia policy, as it was politically motivated.

Ahmadu maintained that Senator Adeyemi is out to destabilize the country, with no good intentions attached to it.

The group described the proposal as unfortunate, at a time flood had ravaged the Senators constituency, only for him to propose Sharia like law.

According to the group, what the lawmaker’s proposal tend to achieve was nothing short of jungle justice in a country that no day passed without reports of jungle justice.

The body said there was nothing wrong with the current law provided for criminal elements, instead of his harsh and inhuman proposal .
