The Zonal meeting of the Chairmen of Local Government Councils which took place in Kaduna, last Sunday turned violent as two Chairmen of Suleja Local Government, Alhaji Abdullahi Ma’aji and his Gurara Local Government Council counterpart, Yusuf Wali Gwamna engaged in free for all fights.
According to report from Kaduna, venue of the meeting, revealed that the Suleja Council Chairman suffered blows and was beaten to stupor until he was rescued from Gwamna by other colleagues before being taken to a nearby medical facility for treatment.
In what was described as a show of shame, a source who witnessed, reported the incident to Niger State government officials in Minna, on Wednesday, said, trouble started when the zonal meeting decided to send a delegation to Zaria to console the emirate over the demise of Emir of Zaria, and Alhaji Shehu Idris.
It was gathered that the meeting requested for two delegates from Niger State and one of the delegates should be the Chairman of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON).
It was further gathered that the Suleja Council Chairman introduced himself as the Chairman of ALGON in Niger State, but his Gurara counterpart protested and kicked against his introduction describing him as an impostor.
However, after the zonal meeting, the Suleja Chairman was said to have accosted his Gurara Colleague and demanded to know why he disgraced him in public.
It was at that point the duo began to exchange hot blows with the Gurara Chairman having upper hand.
The report disclosed that before the intervention of other Council Chairmen, tables, chairs and other available items were freely used on each other, while cups and plates were broken as they dragged each other on the floor.
An eye witness told CAPITAL POST: “It is a big embarrassment and a show of shame. How can they go and disgrace our State like that in far away Kaduna state. It’s an embarrassment that will ever remain in the minds of other Council Chairmen that were in the zonal meeting.”
Meanwhile, Suleja Council Chairman, Alhaji Abdullahi Ma’aji who was in Minna Chief Magistrate Court premises Monday was seen with swollen face with bruises after the fight in Kaduna.
