NIHOTOUR urges teachers to put interest in tourism

National Institute of Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOUR) has encouraged teachers to develop interest in tourism, saying that, it is vital for entrepreneurship and self reliance.

The Director General/CEO of NIHOTOUR, Nura Sani Kangiwa made the disclosure yesterday in Abuja during a training for teachers”tagged” Train the Trainer Course for Secondary School Tourism Teachers in the FCT”.

He said: “in a world of unemployment, these skills can make you self-reliant and an employer of labour.

“You will agree with me that this training could not have come at a better time than this, especially now, given the renewed interest of the Federal Government to diversify the economy from solely dependent on petroleum.”

Declaring the training opened, the DG/CEO, stated that: “I am made to understand that Tourism Curriculum has just been introduced in Secondary schools in Nigeria.

He noted that this Train the Trainer programme is geared towards encouraging teachers to develop interest in Tourism and by extension your students; for self-reliance and entrepreneurship.

“As teachers, you should know that Tourism is a multidisciplinary, multidimensional and multifaceted industry, hence, with the right training; anyone can make a career in it.

“There are a lot of entrepreneurial skills one can acquire in the subsectors of tourism such as tour guiding, tour operation, travel agency operation, cabin crew, cargo handling.
Others are parks and gardens operation, recreation centre management, event management, hospitality management, pastry and cookery, among others,” he added.

Speaking more about the training, the DG emphasised that trainings like this offer a unique opportunity for you to appreciate the enormous resources available in our country, waiting for us to tap and utilize.

He further stated that we want to introduce internet technology in to the atmosphere of the tourism. That is the only want we can reach out to the space more.
