IPOB’s counsel knocks INEC Chairman for praising Ghanaian election
A counsel to the Indigenous People of Biafra and human right activist, Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor, has knocked the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, for praising the just-concluded Ghana’s credible elections.
He said, Yakubu lacks morality to praise his counterpart in the neighbouring Ghana where an opposition won election through credible conduct of the exercise, which cannot happen under his leadership in Nigeria.
In a press statement which he made available to journalists on Monday, Ejiofor said, Yakubu presided over the 2023 election that was marred by irregularities and compromise, so he cannot sit to lavish praise on Ghanaian as this would amount to hypocrisy.
The activist said, Yakubu should hide his face in shame for rigging the 2023 in favour of the ruling party.
He said, “I watched in utter disbelief as Nigeria’s own Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of INEC, lavished praise on his Ghanaian counterpart for conducting a credible election that saw an opposition leader emerge victorious as President-elect.
“For context, this is the same Prof. Yakubu, who presided over the widely criticized 2023 Nigerian presidential election, marred by massive irregularities and allegations of rigging in favour of the ruling party.
“In Ghana, the people’s votes were respected and counted, a stark contrast to the Nigerian experience. Nigerians are still waiting for Prof. Yakubu to explain the so-called ‘glitch’ in INEC’s server that enabled the blatant subversion of the people’s will.
“This manipulated process robbed millions of their rightful mandate and undermined the essence of democracy.
“The consequences of that flawed election are evident in Nigeria’s current dire state. Tragically, those whose mandates were stolen bear the brunt of this crisis, left impoverished and disillusioned.
“As Ghana shines as a beacon of democratic integrity, Nigerians are left with a painful reminder of how far we have fallen. The road to redemption will be long, but the lesson is clear: no nation can thrive when the will of its people is silenced.”
He said the soul of Nigeria demands justice, and history will not be kind to those who betrayed her.
