Tax Reform Bills: Opposition Reps member, Jibrin assures passage amid ACF’s call for rejection
A day after the Northern Elders’ Forum declared their opposition to the Tax Reform Bill before the National Assembly, House of Representatives member, Abdulmumin Jibrin representing Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency of Kano State has assured that lawmakers would throw their weight behind the bills and support its passage.
Hon. Jibrin who of the opposition New Nigeria Political Party, NNPP, said the bills will be passed by both Chambers of the National Assembly soonest, given its strategic importance to the nation, adding that President Bola was giving his “tomorrow for Nigerians”.
Hon Jibrin who is the Chairman of House of Representatives Committee on Housing and Habitat spoke while featuring on the Politics Today Edition of the TVC aired on Sunday night.
The lawmaker said he has no iota of doubt over the bills, insisting that its passage was for the good of the nation and lawmakers in both Chambers have this understanding perfectly.
He acknowledged that there was wrong perception about the Tax Reform Bills in the northern part of the country, stressing that there was need for serious sensitization on the merits of tax reform
“For those of us who have read through the bills very thoroughly, the aggregate of their advantages far surpasses whatever perceived disadvantages perceived by anybody or part of the country.
“President Tinubu is not out for a battle on the bill, just like the Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS said, but for understanding their objectives and goals , which are all geared towards better revenue generation and distribution for economic survival of the country .
“Yes , there may be contentious clauses in the bills, but that should not mean that they should be thrown away or not considered by the National Assembly.
He said, it was up to the lawmakers in both Chambers to subject the bills to legislative processes and possibly amend clause or clauses since they are not cast in stone in the first place .
“As I said a couple of days ago in a similar programme like this , many of those kicking against the bills , have not read them but are just listening to wrong narratives being churned out by some other people”, he explained .
He added that fuel Subsidy removal and cancellation of parallel FOREX market carried out by President Tinubu last year and the proposed tax reform, will transform the Nigeria economy despite the hardships and pains being experienced by Nigerians now .
