Tension in Kano as Tiga Dam shows sign of collapse
Again, residents of Kano are living in palpable fear as reports said, Tiga Dam is showing signs of collapse.
Reacting to the fears, Kano State Government on Monday inspected the Dam to ensure its safety to avoid the repeat of Borno Alua Dam disaster.
Leading the inspection on Monday, the State Commissioner for Water Resources, Ali Makoda, alongside some experts from their respective Ministries visited Tiga Dam amid the tension.
Makoda, while briefing journalists after the inspection in Kano emphasized the importance of the inspection, maintaining that “We came with some experts from both the Ministry of Water Resources, including Works and Housing to assess the situation.
“While the Tiga Dam is managed by the Federal Ministry of Water Resources, our role today was to inspect and ensure everything is in good condition.”
The Commissioner said, they will not allow what happened in Maiduguri to happen in Kano which generated widespread outrage.
“What happened at the Alo Dam sent a very negative signal to Nigerians. That is why His Excellency directed us to be here today,” he explained.
Makoda expressed strong faith that Tiga Dam will not collapse, while he assured Kano residents and the general public that there was no need to panic, insisting that the Dam poses no threat.
He said, “We have listened to the experts, and all indications show that the dam is intact. There is nothing to worry about.”
The inspection was part of the state government’s proactive measures to prevent any potential flooding disasters, as the rainy season intensifies.
The team is expected to continue their assessment at other key dams in the state, including Bagwai and Challawa.
