A Youth oriented Non Government Organization, The Society for the Welfare of Unemployed Youth Of Nigeria (SWUYN) has called on The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to demonstrate non-alignment in the discharge of her duties on the heels of the Saturday 21st Governorship election in Edo state.

The Youth organization made this appeal through the sub-leadership of the Edo state Chapter at the state capital, Benin-city. The State Chairman, Ms. Esther Ofure, whilst expressing their expectations and desired results from the conduct of the polls, stated that the 2024 Edo Gubernatorial Election is another test or trial on the liveliness of Democracy in Nigeria and how well government institutions are committed to its course.

Change of Name

Ofure mentioned that youth unlike in the past are now very much concerned in the political trajectory of Nigeria or of the thirty six sub-nationals considering the scores of youth that had made themselves available during the indication of interest and registration processes for the Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs), organized rallies and voluntary sensitization walks.

Hence, there was a need for the chief umpire (INEC) to work towards encouraging political participation as against apathy in the country, most especially amongst these youth in the light of the possible outcome of the Edo Gubernatorial Election. And this is best achievable by occasioning legitimacy in the course of their operations.

The Society also cited the imperativeness of diligence and non-deviation on the part of the security forces as a complementary factor in achieving a free and fair elections in Edo, calling on The Nigeria Army, The Nigeria Police Force, The Nigeria Civil Defense Corps, and every other security agencies to imbibe their codes of conduct so as to continuously pride themselves during and after the election.
