FG reviewing school curriculum to embrace modern teaching methodologies – ES-NCCE
The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Ministry of Education (FME), is undertaking a comprehensive curriculum review aimed at aligning the Nigerian educational system with contemporary needs and preparing students for the future.
The Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), Professor Paulinus Chijioke Okwelle, made this announcement in an interview shortly after delivering the keynote lecture at the 2024 Institute of Educational Leadership Practitioners of Nigeria (IELPN) International Conference, held on August 14, 2024, at the National Universities Commission (NUC) Auditorium in Abuja.
In his lecture titled “Revolutionizing Education: Harnessing Innovative Pedagogies and Leadership for 21st Century Students,” Professor Okwelle stressed the importance of a robust educational system in fostering national security and economic growth. He emphasized that as the country navigates the complexities of the modern world, it is crucial to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to thrive.
While acknowledging the significant contributions of the traditional educational model over the years, Professor Okwelle highlighted the urgent need for the country to evolve and adopt innovative teaching methods to meet current trends.
“When we talk about revolutionizing education, we are talking about moving from the familiar to a new approach in content and methodology used in lesson delivery,” he said.
Professor Okwelle further noted that this initiative is part of President Bola Ahmad Tinubu’s Renewed Hope commitment to reforming the country’s educational system. He added that the current Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, has introduced a four-point agenda known as DOTS, which focuses on data acquisition, out-of-school children education, teacher capacity development, and skills enhancement.
