NASIEC ready to conduct free, fair LG polls – Wandai

As people of Nasarawa state are ready to go to polls to elect another set of leadership at Local Government level, Chairman of the Nasarawa State Independent Electoral Commission (NASIC) said, the Commission was ready to conduct free and fair polls.

He said polls would be conducted when hefunds is available to them.

Speaking with CAPITAL POST in an interview on Tuesday in Lafia, the Chairman of the electoral upmire, Hon. Usman Wandai made the disclosure, notwithstanding a letter by the State House of Assembly asking the Commission to stop action for the mean time.

According to him, there was a letter from the State House of Assembly advising the Commission to stay action for now.

“As a lawyer under our law which established the commission under schedule 4 section 13 sub section 1, 11 reads that the electoral Commission shall conduct election before the expiration of present set of elected officers within 30 days.

“It shall also published electoral notice stating the date of an election within this law. He added.

The NASIEC, boss further explained that notice shall be published in each of the electoral ward in respect of election to be held that’s under Nasarawa state local government law” therefore with this we are within time. He said.

“We are by this to give 30 days notice before the conduct of election. To me that is why the Assembly advised us to stay action because we are far from the date of the election for this reason we did not come up with our timetable for the election”, Wandai emphasized.

When asked whether citizens of the state will still expect the conduct of the council election in February 2021 as earlier announced, Wandai answered that a lot of things involved which he identified finances as one factors.

“We can only conduct election when we have the resources. So far, we have fed all the political parties in the State based on that the former chairman of the Commission announced the preparation to buy form which we have not received any contrary directive.
