Hunger Protest: Islamic Forum of Imams tells gov’t to tackle hunger, insecurity in Nigeria

The Islamic Forum of Jummah Prayer Imams of Nigeria has called on President Tinubu, the State and Local Government councils to address hunger, economic hardship and insecurity in the country, saying these are issues raising the protest idea.

The forum noted that the economic hardship faced by ordinary Nigerians can be solved by government and advised government that it was not too late to rise to the occasion of proffering possible solution.

In a statement which was signed by the Chairman and National Secretary of the forum, Sheikh Dr. Abbas Ja’afar and Imam Adegbite Mahmud and made available to CAPITAL POST in Abuja, rejected the proposed national protests and said, it was unislamic.

The forum envisaged that the proposed protest was capable of igniting violence leading to bloodletting across the country, hence, it was not in the interest of the nation that deserves peaceful co-existence.

“The Forum agrees and recognises the economic hardships faced by ordinary Nigerians. The Forum advises the Federal, State and Local Governments to do everything possible to ameliorate the situation and also address the problems of insecurity in the country.

“The forum rejects the proposed National Protests as UnIslamic and an action capable of igniting violence and bloodshed in the Country.

“The Forum calls on all Friday prayers Imams Nationwide to use the Friday Prayers Sermon to call on all Islamic faithful to desist from leading, participating or contributing in any form of protest, for whatever reasons and intent.

“The Forum calls on security agencies to protect Muslims in Non Muslim areas and ensure the supremacy of law and order in the country.”

Speaking with our correspondent, the former Senator representing Kaduna Central Senatorial District, and Civil Rights Activist, Shehu Sani and a foremost Human Rights Lawyer, Femi Falana expressed reservation over the planned nationwide protest, which its source remained anonymous.

CAPITAL POST reports that 1st August has been scheduled as commencement date for the national protest.
