Residents of Lokoja, Kogi State, are engaging in a harmful practice that poses severe health risks and discomfort to their neighbors. The alarming trend involves channeling soak-away pipes into drainages and gutters, contaminating water sources and creating unhygienic environments.

This comfort-at-all-costs approach has severe health implications, including the spread of waterborne diseases and even cholera. Residents must recognize the suffering caused by this thoughtless act and take responsibility for their actions.

Change of Name

Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has made efforts to improve the environment in Lokoja, and residents need to complement his efforts.

By working together, we can create a healthier and safer environment for all.

Recall that the Kogi State Ministry of Environment and Ecological Management in a Press Release by Mrs Mariam Adams on 09-03-2024 revealed that The state Commissioner for Environment and Ecological Management, Engr. Hon. Joseph Oluwasegun Stephen during the inspection and monitoring exercise at Murtala Muhammad Road Lokoja on Friday, explained that the sustained clearing of drainages will reduce the flooding of its roads in the 2024 rainy season.
The Commissioner further stated that the measure was part of the Governor Usman Ododo-led administration’s avowed efforts to foster sustainable development and a quality living environment in Kogi state.

The State Ministry of Environment and Ecological Management must take a firm stance against this unhealthy practice by some residents of Lokoja.

To address this issue, the ministry should implement strict regulations, conduct regular inspections, and impose fines on violators.

Public awareness campaigns can also help educate residents on the importance of proper waste management.

In conclusion, residents of Lokoja are warned to discontinue this harmful practice immediately. Continued violations will result in severe consequences. Let’s unite for a better State Capital.
