Plateau State lawmakers calls for flood mitigation measures

The Plateau State House of Assembly has urged the state government to take proactive steps to address the recent flood that affected 65 communities in Langtang North Central State Constituency and prevent future flood disasters in the state.

Member representing Langtang North Central State Constituency and Minority Whip of the Plateau House of Assembly Hon. Daniel Nanbol Listick, moved a motion on the floor of the House on Tuesday, citing Section 20 of the 1999 Constitution, which mandates the state to protect and improve the environment.

Change of Name

The recent flood, which occurred on June 28, 2024, caused significant damage to property, disrupted daily life, and posed safety hazards to residents.

The lawmaker stressed the need for immediate and long-term measures to prevent and mitigate the impact of future flooding in the constituency and other parts of the state.

He urged his colleagues to support the motion, emphasizing the need for proactive measures to minimize the economic and social impact of future flood events in the state.

The speaker of the state house of Assembly Rt. Hon. Gabriel Dewam while commending on the motion express displeasure with the state emergency management agency, SEMA and other relevant bodies saddle with responsibilities of attending to victims of disasters in the state for neglecting directive by the Assembly to provide assistance to victims of various disasters in the state.

Dewam mandated the bodies to act immediately or be compelled to give reasonable explanation for their inaction.

The motion calls on the state government to direct the Ministry of Works, State Emergency Management Agency, and Local Government Councils to conduct a comprehensive assessment of flood-prone areas in Plateau State.

The House directed the relevant agencies to develop and implement a flood management plan, including infrastructure improvements,
Collaborate with relevant agencies and organizations to secure funding and technical support for flood mitigation projects.

The Lawmakers mandated SEMA to Launch a community awareness campaign to educate residents on flood preparedness and response strategies as well as Provide relief materials to the affected communities in Langtang North Central State Constituency.
