President Tinubu approves creation of Livestock ministry to address herders/farmers clashes
In a bid to permanently resolve long standing conflict between farmers and Fulani herders, President Bola Tinubu has approved the creation of Ministry of Livestock Development.
The development was revealed at the Presidential Villa during the launch of the Presidential Committee on Livestock Reforms, signaling a significant step towards resolving this persistent challenge particularly in Benue, Plateau and other trouble spot states.
The creation of the Ministry was at the backdrop of effort by the Senate’s moves to establish a Commission to regulate movement of cattle and other livestock. The bill which was sponsored by Senator Titus Zam Tartenger representing Benue North West Senatorial District
The bill generated tense debate between Senators who believed in the bill and those who were against it, particularly Senator Adamu Aliero from Kebbi State.
The bill later passed for second reading and was referred to the Senate Committee on Agriculture to subject it for public hearing.
