NCCE hosts orientation retreat for new governing councils of Federal Colleges of Education

Following the appointment and inauguration of Federal Tertiary Education Governing Councils members by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) has organized an orientation retreat for the newly inaugurated Governing Councils of the Federal Colleges of Education (CoEs).

The retreat aimed to develop innovations and ideas to address contemporary challenges in the CoEs, particularly the issues of revenue and dwindling enrollment. It was held at the NCCE B.O. Ukeje hall in Abuja.

In his address, the Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman congratulated the council members on their appointment.

Prof. Tahir who was represented by the Director of Colleges in the Ministry, Uchenna Uba, highlighted that their selection was a testament to their exceptional capabilities, unwavering dedication, and profound commitment to the advancement of Nigeria.

He also emphasized the immense responsibility and influence entrusted to them by President Tinubu, noting that their roles as Chairmen and Council Members are pivotal in shaping the future of teacher education in Nigeria.

The Minister underscored that the council members are the custodians of the standards, values, and vision that will drive the Federal CoEs towards excellence. He noted that their contributions will directly impact the development of educators, who will, in turn, transform the minds and futures of young Nigerians positively.

He further urged the council members to approach their responsibilities with wisdom, diligence, and a deep-seated passion for education, assuring them of the Federal Ministry of Education’s full support.

On his part, the Executive Secretary of the NCCE, Professor Chijioke Okwelle, addressed the Chairmen and Members of the Governing Councils. He urged them to develop innovations and ideas to tackle contemporary challenges within the CoEs, particularly concerning revenue generation and declining enrollment.

Professor Okwelle emphasized the significance of the Governing Councils’ roles in ensuring excellence and accountability in the CoEs. He reminded the council members of the primary purpose of Federal CoEs: to produce quality, professionally trained teachers for basic education.

He also stressed the importance of adhering to the laws that established these institutions, as they provide the foundation for governance, operations, and academic activities.

Professor Okwelle called for compliance with these regulations to ensure consistency, fairness, and integrity in the educational system. He assured the council members of the NCCE’s support and highlighted the establishment of a Committee of Chairmen of Governing Councils, which will liaise with various stakeholders to facilitate their work.

In conclusion, The Minister and Executive Secretary of the NCCE underscored the profound impact and significance of the council members’ roles. They encouraged them to approach their responsibilities with a deep sense of purpose, commitment, and collaboration, assuring them of support from both the Federal Ministry of Education and the NCCE in their endeavors.
