BREAKING: Fubara orders audit of LG accounts after swearing in caretaker chairmen
Rivers State governor, Siminalayi Fubara has ordered for audit of Local Government Council finances in the State.
He gave the fresh order after swearing in new Caretaker Committee chairmen on Wednesday.
The former LG Chairmen ended their tenure on Tuesday amid crisis that led to the killing of two police officers.
CAPITAL POST recalled that all the 23 Local Government Chairmen were elected during the former governor of Rivers State and now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike which they still maintain their loyalty to him.
The new LG Chairmen were screened and approved by the House of Assembly led by the factional Speaker, Victor Jumbo on Tuesday.
Meanwhile Fubara urged the newly appointed caretaker chairmen to view themselves as guardians rather than superheroes, tasked with safeguarding the interests of their constituents and proving their worthiness of the government’s choice.
He underscored that these developments are intrinsic to democratic principles, emphasizing that the resistance against tenure extension is not exclusive to Rivers State but has national implications. Allowing it in one state, he cautioned, could set a precedent nationwide.
Governor Fubara clarified that the appointment of caretaker committees is a common practice across many states in the country and assured that their tenure would not be prolonged excessively, as plans for local government elections would commence soon.
He stressed a non-violent approach to governance and urged the officials to promptly resolve the financial obligations of their predecessors, particularly concerning salaries and entitlements.
