Senate President Akpabio, principal officers celebrate Int’t women’s day

The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, principal officers and other distinguished colleagues on Thursday joined their female colleagues to mark this year international women’s day.

March 8 has been set aside to mark international women’s day which commenced in 2010. This was as a result of the March 8, 1908, women workers protest through New York City’s Lower East Side to registered displeasure over child labor and sweatshop working conditions, and demand women’s suffrage.

Change of Name

However in 1910, Clara Zetkin proposed International Women’s Day at the International Women’s Conference in Copenhagen. The idea was unanimously approved, leading to the first observance in 1911 in several European countries, with over a million participants advocating for women’s rights. Therefore, beginning in 1910, March 8 became annually observed as International Women’s Day.
