NIQS vows to eliminate quacks from the profession
Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS), said it is working towards eliminating quacks from the profession.
The Chairman, Senate Members of the Institute, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Unity Chapter, Abdulwasiu Igbalaye stated this at a press conference to mark the end of year activities on Tuesday, in Abuja.
Igbalaye said the leadership of the Institute is engaging with relevant agencies to ensure that unprofessional individuals posing as Quantity Surveyors are flushed out.
He said, “we have a proposal that is submitted at Development Control. So far so good, it is at 95 percent stage now. This week, we are having a meeting with the Director of Development Control, to present the final draft of that proposal. I am very confident that by the time everything is in place, it is going to address this issue of quackery in the profession”.
The Chairman further solicited for support to enable the institute carry out its activities seamlessly.
“We are looking forward to self sponsor in most of all our activities even though we’ve been getting. We still want more”, he added.
Speaking on the Institute achievements in the last one year, he said, “When we assumed office, we promised that we were going to set our ball rolling immediately. Around February, We started our MRS tutorial classes which is for the first diet and to God be the glory, we were able to complete it successfully. We did the second diet around September and it was a very successful one.
“We had a two-day workshop which was held from the 3rd to 4th October 2023 at Merit House and the theme of the workshop was, “High cost of construction project in Nigeria: Issues and way forward” and it was well attended both physically and virtually. We recorded a very successful outing. We equally coordinated five days working training from some of our senior colleagues in the chapter. We had all the North-Central chapters and Abuja was the host and coordinator of that event.
“We were also chosen to be the host of 2023 BGM. Thank God it was a successful one. The welcome cocktail party and gala night was well attended. We had about four countries within Africa. We had Botswana, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Uganda in attendance and it was well attended.
“We are visiting the National Assembly tomorrow (Wednesday). We are going to round off the visit by going to an orphanage home and to the University of Abuja, although it is a new department (Quantity Survey), we want to pay a visit to them and support them in our own way. The Vice Chancellor is happy that we are coming. So Inshallah, we will be there by Thursday.
“We will crown it up on Saturday when all the members of the chapter will come with their families and enjoy themselves.
“We are going to have a football match and Volley ball with Nigeria Institute of Management and Surveyors FCT to end all our activities”.
