BREAKING: Kogi INEC Commissioner escapes assassination as gunmen attack residence in Lokoja
Suspected gunmen in the early hours of Friday in Lokoja attacked the residence of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC Commissioner, Dr Hale Gabriel Longpet at 3.30am with the purpose of eliminating him.
CAPITAL POST correspondent in Kogi confirmed that the INEC Resident Commissioner escaped unhurt by the whiskers as security agents on guard engaged the gunmen in gun duel for 30 minutes before reinforcement of security operatives.
Though, no live was lost in the encounter, properties worth millions of naira was destroyed as a result of gunfire from the attackers.
The headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission has confirmed the attack on the Resident Commissioner in Kogi.
Large number of security operatives were seen in the morning of Friday cordoning off the environment, while the residence of the Commission is currently under heavy protection.
CAPITAL POST recalled that the Commissioner reportedly rejected fund from government quarters sent to him as logistics a week to the election.
Sources from INEC office in Lokoja pointed out that the Resident Commissioner refused to hobnob with government throughout the governorship election, a development that may have pitched him with powers that may want to eliminate him now.
