Liberian President, George Weach has been commended by the Nigerian former President, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan for conceding defeat to the opposition leader, Joseph Boakai in the just concluded president election.

For accepting defeat, Jonathan said, it was a show of statesmanship that is most desirable in Liberia at this time.

The opposition leader, Boakai was reported by the Liberia’s Electoral Commission to have scored 50.89 per cent after tallying the ballots from more than 99 per cent of polling stations, while Weah had 49.11 per cent.

Jonathan tweeted on Saturday, which he titled ‘Liberia wins, Democracy gains,’ and expressed delight in the political developments in Liberia.

Jonathan former commended George Weah for congratulating his opponent.

Liberia’s Electoral Commission will officially declare the opposition winner at a time yet to be announced.

The tweet partly read, “I am also particularly grateful to the outgoing President, His Excellency George Weah, who has just conceded defeat and congratulated his opponent even ahead of the official declaration of the final result by the National Election Commission of Liberia.

“By doing this, President Weah has exhibited an exemplary display of statesmanship and commitment to the peace and progress of his country.”

He also urged Boakai to be “magnanimous in victory and seek to continue the efforts to unite and advance his country.”
