Kogi East Neighbourhood Watch, a vigilante outfit working in synergy with other security agencies has called on the higher military command to investigate “attempted assassination” claims on governor Yahaya Bello.

The group said, the claim in the press release by the Kogi State Commissioner for Information and Communication, stating that political thugs waylaid the convoy of Yahaya Bello and attempted to assassinate him, while travelling to Abuja calls for serious investigation.

In a statement issued by the Director of Public Communication of the group, Wing Commander Iye Ayefu Akuh and sent to CAPITAL POST, said, pictures of the encounter which began to emerge late Sunday was contrary to the claims in the rushed press release.

The KENW, said, a personnel of the
personnel of the 176 Brigade could be seen fatally injured, hence, investigation by the military command would lay bare what transpired between governor Bello and security agents.

The statemwnt read: “Ahead of the November 11 2023 gubernatorial election in Kogi State, KENW Central Cordinating Committee is concerned about the truth of the publication that political thugs attacked the governor’s convoy on the Abaji-Abuja portion of the Lokoja-Abuja highway .

“Pictures coming out of the alleged attack showed a personnel of the 176 Brigade who was stabbed.

“KENW has received intelligence report that this is not the first time the security in the governor’s convoy will have fracas with security agencies. Intelligence has suggested that there was a similar attack in front of the 12: Brigade Nigerian Army, Lokoja.

“The Military higher Command would need to quickly investigate current and previous activities of the security in the governor’s convoy to unravel whether this current attack is politically motivated as claimed by the Commissioner of Information, Kogi State or a breach of Security involving the security outfit of the governor’s convoy and the military.

“It is important to clear whether the press release made by the Commissioner for information can be treated as reliable or otherwise.”
