At Kogi FIDA 2023 week, Governor’s wife, Amina Bello settles hospital bills of patients

At the Kogi State 2023 FIDA week, the wife of Kogi State governor, Hajia Amina Yahaya Bello, in her speech eulogised women in law profession for their contribution to the development of the society.

The governor’s wife on Wednesday also visited the FIDA Maternity Ward at the Specialist Hospital, Lokoja later in the afternoon on an assessment with her intervention for patients.

Earlier in her speech, Mrs Bello stressed the importance of addressing violence against women and children, highlighting this year’s theme, ‘Combating Violence Against Women And Children (VAWC) – New Skills And Strategies.’

She conveyed the urgency of this issue, calling VAWC an ‘appalling crime (that) knows no boundaries, transcending geographical, cultural, and socio-economic divides.’

She decried it as, ‘…a global crisis that calls for global unity of action, as well as locally tailored solutions’.

Mrs. Bello, who acknowledged the evolving nature of the problem also stressed the need for innovative approaches to tackle the persistent challenges faced by victims and demanded that human rights bodies develop new approaches.

She pointed out the pivotal role of technology, education, and media advocacy in empowering communities and encouraging victims to come forward.

According to her, a comprehensive approach would encompass legal reforms, collaboration with law enforcement and the activities of effective support networks like FIDA to ensure that justice is served swiftly.

Her Excellency who paid tribute to her husband, Governor Yahaya Bello, for his remarkable commitment to gender equity and the welfare of children noted his administration’s achievements, including surpassing the 35% UN Affirmative Action threshold for women appointed into government and the passage of important legislation like the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Bill.

She thanked the New Direction Administration in Kogi State led by Governor Yahaya Bello for showcasing dedication to the protection of women and children in very practical manners through support for the work of FIDA, as well as the establishment of the Kogi State Office of the Public Defender and Citizens Rights Advocate, an agency set up by her husband’s administration which has been active in protecting the target group of vulnerable citizens from domestic assault, child labour and other forms of violence.

Hajia Bello visited the FIDA Maternity Ward later in the afternoon of the same Wednesday the 13th where she was received with great enthusiasm by the staff and patients.

It would be recalled that some years back, FIDA, Kogi State Branch endowed the ward with the support of the Kogi State Government through the good offices of Her Excellency.

At the hospital, the kind-hearted Hajia Bello was touched by the plight of some of the patients and as is customary with her during such visits, she rendered assistance to them by clearing outstanding bills and paying for different medical procedures, particularly for expectant mothers and those with newborn babies.

She also donated some equipment, including a new incubator, to the hospital.

Sharing in the philosophy of Joél Leon who said: “If we are asking for the world to be kind, we must first ask what we are doing to add more kindness to the world. If we are asking for the world to be more loving, we must first ask what we are doing to add more love to the world.

We are the vessels for the things we seek,” Mrs. Bello believes that every act of kindness you show can make a meaningful difference in the lives of others, and she finds great fulfillment and satisfaction in reaching out to those in need, especially women and children.

She further appealed to individuals to embrace the principle of contributing to our country, state, community and family, rather than solely expecting what these entities can provide for us..Overjoyed staff and patients were full of praises for the wife of the Governor, commending her generosity and ready commitment to improving the lives of women and children in Kogi State.

An executive of FIDA, Kogi State who was on the entourage told our correspondent that Hajia Bello’s philanthropy and her support for this year’s FIDA Week are a testament to her commitment to social justice and gender equality, saying that her actions are an inspiration to all.

Akpabio pays historic visit to office of SA to President on Senate Matters

The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio has commended Senator Basheer Lado, for redefining the Office of the Special Adviser to the President on Senate Matters, stating that, for the first time in a long while, the office is fully meeting its expectations.

Plateau LP stakeholders endorses Barr Gyang Zi’s defection to APC

Ahead of the 2025 political party Congresses, Plateau State Chapter of the Labour Party (LP) stakeholders has endorsed the defection of the candidate of the party in the 2023 general elections and the leader of Justice and Rebirth, Barr Gyang Zi SAN, to the All Progressive Congress (APC) with the view to key into the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu.

They made the call in a communique issued at the end of the enlarge meeting of the stakeholders from Plateau North senatorial zone at the residence of Barr. Gyang Zi in Rayfield Jos.

The communique which was jointly signed by Dr. Ayiki Sati Director General, Justice and Rebirth and
Barr. Samuel Galadima- 2024 Chairmanship candidate of Jos East LGA among others said the call became imperative on the sideline of the leadership tussle at the National Level which violates the core principles and values for the formation of the Party as an alternative for Nigeria for the protection, sustenance of democracy and Social Justice.

They regretted that the leadership tussle has also divided the party into factions leaving party loyalists and supporters in the state of despondency and confusion not knowing where they belong.

Our correspondent reports that the gathering included LP candidates from the 2023/2024 general elections, party executives, and support groups from the six local government areas of the Northern Senatorial District.

Besides, the focus of the discussions was centered on the state of the Labour Party at both national and state levels and the need for political realignment ahead of the 2025 party congresses and conventions.

The stakeholders further frowned at the structural weaknesses in LP and resolved to advise Barr Gyang Zi, to leave the party and join the APC while expressing confidence that the APC would provide him with a platform to advance good governance in the state .

The communique also emphasized the importance of political consultations, particularly with APC leaders at both state and national levels. It called for collaboration with Plateau State APC leaders, including Minister of Humanitarian Affairs Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda Goshwe, Sen. Simon Bako Lalong, Sen. Diket Plang, and other party officials.

According to the communique, supporters of Barr Gyang Zi also pledged to mobilize grassroots support for the APC, stating that their leader’s defection would strengthen the party in the state.

They urged the APC leadership to formally receive Gyang Zi and his supporters into the party, marking their official transition from the Labour Party.

Stakeholders also reiterated the need for inclusive governance, ensuring that youths, women, and less privileged individuals are sidelined in the democratic process and accordingly officially denounced their membership in the Labour Party, declaring their support for the APC.

They assured that all LP structures aligned with Gyang Zi would follow suit, shifting their loyalty to the ruling party in the state and at the National level.
