Protest: Students body dares DSS, to storm UNILAG Wednesday

The umbrella body of Students in higher institutions in Nigeria has dared the Department of State Services, DSS, not to intimidate them as they are sure-bet to protest to the University of Lagos on Wednesday in show of their distaste for the harsh economy created by the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu government.

The body, National Association of Nigerian Students believed that the protest is part of their universally recognized human right, hence, nothing would stop them.

Mr Giwa Temitope, the National Public Relations Officer of NANS reacted to a statement by the secret police, alleging that some politicians were mobilizing students, hoodlums and ethnic leaders to protest against the government.

CAPITAL POST reported on Monday that the Public Relations Officer of the Service, Dr. Peter Afunanya in a statement warned that they have uncovered a plot by some elements to distabilise the nation through a protest, citing socioeconomic matters.

“Intelligence reports have indicated that the plotters include certain politicians who are desperately mobilising unsuspecting student leaders, ethnic-based associations, youth, and disgruntled groups for the planned action,” the spokesperson for the security agency, Peter Afunanya stated on Monday.

In a statement by NANS in Lagos, insisted that students would be storming UNILAG for the protest and urged the DSS not to infringe on the rights of students.

Giwa said, “It is quite embarrassing that the DSS has derailed to become the propaganda arm of the Federal Government, thereby, raising false alarms and even interfering in affairs that do not in any way relate to their line of profession.

“As an association, we maintain that we are not satisfied with how the Nigerian society is being run, most especially, as regards arbitrary fee increment across our tertiary institutions, with the University of Lagos being a model.”
